PUTTING IT TOGETHER The rebuild is always the reverse of the stripdown, of course, but there's a little more to it than that, so Brian Crichton adds some extra information.

LAST month Honda expert John Wyatt got as far as stripping and Separating the crankcase halves. In this penultimate part we consider stripdown and rebuild notes with full specification data - courtesy of Honda UK - to come next month.

• Remove the gearbox cluster (pic 85) and thoroughly check all gears, grooves and bearings for wear and damage.
• Check selector forks (pic 86), the tracks in which they run (pic 85) and selector drum.
• Make sure that countershaft third gear is correctly fitted on reassembly. It's possible to get it the wrong way round. The 8.5mm recess in the gear should face countershaft fifth gear, and the 4mm recess should face countershaft fourth gear. Incorrect gear engagement will occur if this gear is fitted the wrong way round.
• Countershaft fourth gear can give trouble because of slop in the selector fork groove. Wear of the mainshaft fourth gear bush must also be investigated. This engine is in good condition in all these respects and there was no need to take the gear cluster apart.
• Inspect primary chain tensioner oil feed - both seals and filter. This one has been leaking which may cause rattling of the primary chain because of reduced pressure.
• This crankshaft appears to be in top condition. Note that oil feed holes, especially on No 5 and No 6 cylinders, can become gummed on high mileage engines which have not had their oil changed regularly.
• Service Exchange Parts at 32 Sidely Road, Kegworth, Derbyshire, provide a full crank cleaning service which is recommended for any crankshaft which is the subject of doubt. SEP also do crank regrinds.

REBUILD NOTES

• Always replace the rubber washers either side of the primary chain tensioner oil feed pipe.
• Make absolutely certain that the recess on the end of the primary shaft points at 90 degrees to the crankcase joint and is aligned with the index mark on the primary drive sprocket. At the same time the 'T' mark on the crankshaft must be aligned with the forward crankcase mating surface.
• Do not omit the wave washer that goes between the starter idler gear and the inner crankcase wall.
