CBX Stripdown - page 15 (Vol. 53 - March 1992)

Stripping the Bottom End Last month John Wyatt took the top end of editor Bob's engine apart for inspection. Now he completes the stripdown with words and pictures by Brian Crichton. The picture numbering sequence continues from last month.

WE now turn to separating the crankcase halves.

• Remove four bolts on top of crankcase, one 10mm socket, three 12mm, (pic 74).
• Remove left side crankshaft end cap - three crosshead screws. Note O-ring on top screw (pic 75).

• Bob had told us that he had drained the oil but when John turned it upside down to remove lower crankcase bolts plenty of oil came out! (pic 76). When draining an engine it's best to do it when the oil has been warmed and hence thinned after a decent run. This engine had no doubt been drained cold and half a pint or so of oil remained. (Sorry chaps, BB.)
• As a point of interest the engine being worked on here is a CBX-Z. With the engine turned over, remove the eight sump bolts (10mm socket, pic 77).
• Remove sump (pic 78) and inspect for debris in oil pump filter screen (pic 79) and bottom of sump. Note a fair amount of debris in this engine - more than would normally be expected. On investigation much of it was found to be gasket cement.

• The oil filter screen should be cleaned every 11,250 miles. You can remove the sump with the engine in situ, so the fanatical owner could clean this filter every time he changes the oil, ie remove the sump rather than only the sump plug. Note that the sump plug is not magnetic.
• The sump has a rubber seal rather than gasket which could be re-used several times before replacement became necessary.
