Check oil pool plates (pic seven). When the engine is
running the cam buckets are submerged in oil which is retained
by the pool plates. They keep the oil over the working area and
are made from rubber backed metal. Thankfully these are rarely
broken. There are six in total.
Check rev counter cam cap for breakage. This one is fine (pic
eight).
Remove oil pipes (pic nine) and top camchain guide (10mm
spanner). There are five bolts in all three with washers, the two
without being those on the left hand side of the engine (drive
side).
Beware of dropping the smallest camchain guide bolt into the
crankcase, especially if you are only doing a top end overhaul!
Remove No 4, 5, 12 and 13 cam caps completely, ie the four
surrounding the camchain tunnel - eight bolts in total (10mm
spanner).
Note for reassembly - cam caps start at drive side exhaust
and work their way across the bike and continue on the inlet side
from the drive side 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16. Note arrows
point forward. Cam caps on this engine are perfect. This motor
has done 33,000 miles (engine No CB1E 2017281).
Note that the bolts that fit through the oil unions are longer
than the other cam cap bolts.
