Newbie '79 CBX w/ 68 miles

Hi All,

I grew up drooling over my uncles '79 CBX that sat in his office at his architecture firm, like a museum piece. I would sit on it and pretend to ride etc... Once when I was 17 and he had moved into his shop, I even got to start it and listen to the 6 into 6 exhaust howl, something I'll never forget. Well as my uncle has gotten older, he has started to clear out some of his collection of cool motor vehicles. Last spring I asked him if he still had the CBX, he said yes and that he was going to sell it. I promptly told him that I'd buy it and to promise me he wouldn't sell it to anyone else and he agreed. Well now I've got it, it has just arrived in Santa Fe after being shipped out here from NJ. I always new it had low miles, as I knew he had never ridden it much, I'd even been telling people that I was pretty sure it had less than 1000 miles. When the truck delivered it and I took a look at the ODO I was totally shocked to see that it only has 68 original miles! This might be the most pristine, un-restored CBX in existence?

Any way now the work begins. I'm not planning to restore it as it doesn't need to be restored, just clean it up, fix some of the chrome and get it running again. I was thinking that sending the carbs off to Mike Nixon might be a good starting point and order up some parts to rebuild the obviously leaking master cylinders etc... Any other suggestions this group might have as to where to start on a '79 CBX that has basically sat it's whole life would be welcomed.

That is a good background story to the bike.
The Denco exhaust system on your bike does have a great sound.

The only thing that concerns me a little: The odometer window cutout in the speedo did not have a red lining.
Here is a picture of a NOS instrument.

EMS, could you elaborate on the difference you see in the two speedometers. I don't know what you mean by a red cutout lining. And, by the way, his is a US MPH speedo, while your example is KPH. I just don't see the difference in the ODO cutout.

Maybe there is no difference and it is just the photo. But the window sides, the "inside walls" of the face plate ( I don't know how to describe it better) of the odometer look red in his picture. It doesn't matter whether it is a kph or mph speedo.
I just took a NOS unit that I had.

Not sure what to say about the speedo?? I know he never swapped it.

My plans are to get it going and ride it! I do not plan to go over the top with the restoration, just fix some of the chrome and all the mechanical stuff that comes from sitting my for so long.

I'm curious if the Denco exhaust as originally chrome? It looks like someone hit it with silver spray paint in an attempt to stop it from rusting any further? Same on the rear shocks?

Also I sent out a PM to the three other forum members listed in Santa Fe NM, but haven't heard back. If any of you know any of them, would you make be asking them to check their PM inbox?

It sure looks a little different from that vantage point. Don't get me wrong, I think you have a mighty fine bike, but...
If it was FOR SALE and I would be Interested in BUYING it, I would ask some questions, like:
WHY does it have a 6-6 exhaust with only 68 miles on the odometer.
Why does it have a Sport Kit installed after only 68 miles on the odometer.
These are changes one makes after they are not happy with the original set-up. Considering the investment for these parts, you really have to have SOME experience with what you have in order to desire these changes. 68 miles, you do not.

It looks to be exceptionally fine specimen...at 68miles it's far from the lowest milage, a Z sold a year or two back only had 7 or 9 miles and it's doubtful that for the amount paid for it it'll ever log any more, it's a museum piece. And I believe Bert at six center had an '81 with 2 or 3 km's. Still you have an awesome find I'm very jealous. Enjoy the forum you won't find a more knowledgeable bunch of gearheads anywhere.

Goobz uncle could probably shed some light on those questions. Those aren't the kind of changes you expect to see after 68 miles, I don't even recall 6 into 6 pipes being available early on, only 6 into 1's.

I went out into the garage and checked my speedo and no red on the window. I'm the only owner so I know the speedo has never been changed.

Love to have the sport kit on it...

Welcome, and nice bike!

I know some people who bought CBXs had the sport kit put on right away. As for the red edge in the window, I heard once that the plastic face of the gauges is red, painted black. So, it may have not been masked properly in production. Does anyone have a gauge face they can "scratch" to confirm or dis-prove this?
