80 STORAGE COMPARTMENT LID

Post by twinegar »

Any creative ideas on repairing the crack under the lock mechanism? I am using square brass tubing and JB Weld to put the proper arc in the lid, lost when the rib under the lock cracked.

Plastic welding for the crack, maybe ? When I get brave, I`m going to set my trunk lid in the oven on low temp and try to get the ends to sag down just a little to match the tail section radius.

Honda really dropped the ball on the storage compartment. A great idea that they relegated to some low level designer of plastic model kits. The lid should have been made of aluminum.

A hand held hair dryer might work but it is hard to get just hot enough to change the shape without shrinking the piece. I never had any luck with that. Phil, keep us updated if you do try the heat method and right down the temperature where the plastic becomes pliable.

I have started making the changes that I described and will keep the page updated with pictures as I go. It looks ugly now but once finished will look like a 3/4 wide plastic beam. For lids that haven't cracked yet a piece of 2mm plastic sheet tightly bonded over the lock cylinder hole would strengthen where it usually cracks and the metal fastener should still fit. A metal shop could probably make an insert to fit just inside the lid rim that could be epoxied in and would solve all the problems. I am going to buy a piece of 4mm aluminum and try my luck at making a lid from scratch.
