What Parts Are Still Available From Honda For 79 CBX?

Post by sixofsix »

Just went through the silver 79 CBX rider and bought a number of parts.

Here is a list of what is still available:

14 mm locknuts for lower engine mount studs. (but not the thick flat washers)
Swing Arm bushing outer oil seals
Seat mount hardware
Spark Plug Wires
Brake Pad Shims
Front Fender Speedo Grommet
Air Cleaner Element
Lower Shock Bushings
Lower Chrome Rear Shock Bolts
Upper Shock Nuts, Washers
Center and Side Stand Springs
Rear Brake Switch Spring
Mirrors - exactly as originals!
Rear Brake Torque Arm Special Bolts and Slotted Nuts
Clutch Lever Special Chrome Pivot Bolt and Thin Nut
Special Chrome C/Sunk Screw for Speedo Cable Lower Holding
Rubber Boot For Clutch Lever
Screws to Attach Blinker Lenses
Shifter Rubber Boot, Chrome Nut and Rubber Pad for Shifter
Battery Box and Headlight Rubber Anti Vibration Grommets
Special Packing for attaching #2-5 Exh. Pipes into Headers
Screws for Heat Shields on Exhaust
Grommets for Side Covers and Front of Bat. Box to Air Cleaner
Bolts For Chain Guard
Side Cover CBX Decals
Exhaust Studs and Nuts for Exh. to Engine
Most All O-Rings
Most All Fasteners, except specials such as Upper Chrome Engine Mount Bolts, Lower Long Studs for Rear Engine Mount and Swing Arm Pivot Stud.
Fork Seals and wipers.
Brake Rebuild Kits
Top Rubber Bumper on Tail Light to Cowl - Still Avail.
Throttle Cables Discontinued! I think all others still avail though.
Drain Hoses Holder (on Side of Center Stand) - Discontinued
Center Inner Collar for Swing Arm Pivot - Discontinued
Rear Brake Stop Switch - Disc.
Throttle Cable Clip to Hold Cables Together by handlebar - Disc.
Clamp to Hold Three Each Spark Plug Wires - Disc.
Side Rubber Bumpers between Tail Light and Rear Cowl - Disc
Rear Brake Return Spring - Disc. Why?
Rubber Cap for Rear Brake Pedal Shaft End - Disc.
Storage Tank for Air Cleaner Fluids and Goo - Disc.
Cam Oil Pool Plates - Disc.

Most of the "still available from Honda" stuff is listed on Ebay and goes for big $$$. Check with your dealer first!

Obv. Much more is still available, but mostly brake rebuild stuff, engine internals, and clutch plates.

Most big stuff is gone. No more Tanks, Fenders, Side Covers, Rear Cowls. Seat still avail apparently, but diff. design on vinyl. Exhaust systems long gone. Foot Pegs Long Gone. Handle Bar Switch Assys long gone. Main Wiring Harness long gone.

Winker Assys (Turn Signals) still avail. for some reason. But only one generic one, that you use for all four now. Same externally, but wire colors are not different for each winker. Nothing like fresh new lenses and the black housings with good internal connections!

Handle Bar Grips still avail.

Gas Tank Mounting Rubbers long gone, too bad. Gages long gone.

Crank and Cam end Covers still avail. for some reason.

Advancer Cover disc. Primary Chain long gone. Clutch basket and Center discontinued. Carb Drain Hoses gone too.

Anything else?

Oh yeah, the horizontal cam chain upper guide is discontinued too.

That's it for now...

Good info. Thanks for the updated list.

I just ordered some of the 14mm nuts and hadn't heard back if they were available or not.

Just picked up one of the horizontal cam chain guides off of eBay. I was able to locate all of the other guides/tensioners/chains.

Chris:

Just got 4 of those 14mm nuts a couple weeks ago. They are different from original, but are of the same locking design. Basically look almost identical except have a slight step where they go from hex shape to the dome portion. Same physical size too.

I got the last two flat washers, then discontinued those. Too bad as the washers always get damaged after a engine swap or two. And they were nice and thick. Time to get originals re-plated...

I had to chase the thread on one of the long studs for the rear engine or swing arm pivot. It is 14 mm X 1.5 mm pitch. I had to special order a die for it. You know how one thread gets damaged on the long stud so one nut ends up being at the end while on the other side of the frame the stud sticks out 3/4"?

Tony,

I'm going to get a bunch of my old fasteners replated in the next few weeks. I can get a much better price if I get a bunch done at once.

I need to get some engine bolts rethreaded as well. Will try to get my local machinst to do it for me.

I received my order. Got some washers but not the 14mm nuts. :?

I saw a very similar nuts at my local hardware store. Don't know if they are the same thread. I'll buy some and find out.

you can go online at bikebandit.com and see much of what is still available in real time. i've found their site to be accurate when ordering (no orders not filled due to the site being in error). It surprises me how much stuff is still available.

Thanks for the tip. I am new at this forum, got my first ever CBX on Ebay in nov/06 and I am working on it since that.

It's all apart and I'm getting new washers and screws for a better look. Sent a list of parts to the local dealer, and bikebandit.com will be my second option.

Thanks for the nice words. The bike I got has 493 original miles, and everything on it is stock(except the battery), including the tires.
It's in pretty good shape, but after being stored during 28 years it demands a lot of cleaning and, of course, some new parts for a better look.
I sent some parts for powder coating, chrome and zinc plating. I am still cleaning a lot of things and will start the assembling process in one or two weeks.
I am taking my time to get everything well done, doesn't matter how many hours I spent on each item to get its best look.
This forum has been very useful for me to get all sort of information and to learn a lot about CBX's.
