Dead coil
Well last fall I lost cylinders 2-5 on a long ride. When testing I found my ignitors have given up. I replaced with a used set and she ran great until last weeken on a long ride when I lost cylinders 3-4. I tested the coils first again and found I had all cylinders. Also found a large crack in coil 3-4. Not unusual to have some cracks in the coils without problems but bingo. Ordered a new coil

Re: Dead coil
I'm confused - you've lost cylinders 3-4 now? Likely the spark unit again. The crack you notice is quite common and while troubling, is likely not your problem, which it sounds like you've figured out? Nice collection of bikes!!

Re: Dead coil
Yeah Dave, I was sure it would be the used ignitors I installed last winter. But testing with a known coil pack and seeing the crack in the corresponding coil, and it working with the coil pack. It’s the coil. I bet if the 40 honda coils in the 11 running Honda’s right now. I bet half of the coils have cracks with no running problems,,, until they do!

Re: Dead coil
I would recommend going for the Dyna system , it does away with the igniter's under theach frame , they areally so troublesome ! ☺

Re: Dead coil
Recieved the new coil yesterday and installed it. Running great so far. I’m sure there’s a replacement for the ignitors in the future for both of my cbx’s but for now she’s up and running.

Re: Dead coil
Just a update... after replacing the cracked coil the bikes running great! While waiting I installed a coil bypass wiring and replaced the main fuse with a blade. Also entered a motorcycle show and took 2nd place next to a professionally restored, beautiful 75 kz900

Re: Dead coil
I have installed Procom igniters on my own twin shock and sold a few of my kits (c/w with ignition coil relay by-pass and replacement main fuse holder). That said, just y'day I too had one of the Procom igniters die. It's now the 3rd one I have heard that has failed.
On my build, it was the centre igniter providing service to cylinders 3 & 4. Ironically, I had just built a new 'Procom igniter to OEM wiring loom interface kit' of my own, so immediately thought it was something I had done. Spent some time chasing my tail thinking I had buggered it up before discovering the Procom had failed. Luckily I had a spare so no biggie.
Folk-lore has it the centre ignitor does get much hotter than it's two out-board 'blowin' in the wind' neighbours and so is more prone to failure.
My CBX had sat for over 12 months and had run flawlessly until I attempted to light the wick from stone cold and only lit up on four cylinders. I am going to see if it is possible to relocate them up under the seat, Pro-link style. That's where I currently have my Panasonic ignition coil relay and main fuse sitting.
BTW, Irishman that's a gorgeous fleet of bikes BTW, lovin' those Wings. And PM me if I can help you with a wiring diagram to make up your own kit to integrate Procoms into the OEM loom connectors. If you can do the ignition coil relay mod, you are more than up to the task of making the 'interface loom'. Procoms at $79 a pair retail are still good value IMHO, even if they do have the odd failure. ((http://www.procomeng.com/estore/feature ... 900-a.html) )
