I have a stock exhaust system on my 1980 CBX. The exh. pipes leading to the mufflers are in nice shape but both mufflers are dented and scratched beyond repair, according to a local rechrome shop. What are my options besides replacing the complete exhausts (too expensive)? My thought is to cut off the original mufflers and adapt some universal or salvage yard muffler from another bike. I want them to look good, not cost more than $500 and not have a negative affect on performance. Has anyone done this with success. I tried to find an answer by looking through this forum topic but did not find anyone that was trying to do what I want to do. Other than cosmetics, the current mufflers are quiet and perform perfectly. I am hoping to have them look as close to stock as possible or be an attractive alternative to the stock look.
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions. Pictures of what you have done would be great.
Howard

This would be one way to go: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1980-honda-cbx- ... 6c&vxp=mtr
You can fiddle with what you said, but getting something that meets all your stated criteria will be impossible. CBX exhausts are just plain expensive, but not nearly as much as they were 5 years ago, before the reproduction ones became available. NOS ones and mint used ones went for over $3000 pretty often.
Not saying what you could get those for, and I'd need to see pics of the cans better, but they look pretty nice. I'd expect to pay close to $1000, but who knows. Decide what you would be willing to spend and snipe them.
Another option is the seconds from David Silver of the very fine Sankei reproduction systems. I think they have them advertised at $799 or $899. Both second sets I've seen are very nice with hardly any blemishes.
In any case, you'll have to spend close to $1000 or more for what you really want. A lot depends on how nice the rest of the bike is.
CBX ownership isn't cheap if you want them to look good.

Thanks Dave for the info. The idea of seconds Sankei exhausts is certainly something to look into as well as used units.

Not a bad deal for a -469- exhaust in that condition...daves79x wrote:This would be one way to go: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1980-honda-cbx- ... 6c&vxp=mtr
