Looking at 2 CBXs

Post by JHGilbert »

My background is BMWs...K75RT, K1100LT, R1150RT and a lone Honda GL650. But I've had a long fascination with CBXs and found a low mileage bike that comes with a second one with a blown engine. What I'm wondering is how dependable on a daily basis are the CBXs? I commute daily and pile on 12k miles per year. I look at this as a great deal...one to ride and one to restore (in candy apple red though). Any insight into what I'm getting into?

By the way, I do all my own maintenance, tuning, spline lubes, plus maintenance and overhauls on cars. I'm basically a decent shade-tree mechanic.

Welcome to the site, JH.
A shadetree mechanic will do fine with a CBX. There is just more of everything.
With the amazing info in the archives of this site and the help of the members any/all problems can get sorted.
The Six is addictive, take it for a ride, you won't regret it.

Hello, JH! Welcome to the ICOA forum.
As far as dependability is concerned, the CBX is as dependable as any other 30 year old bike. The big advantage is, it doesn't need spline lubes.
I own 3 CBXes and several BMWs too and in a direct comparison, the CBX will require more, not necessarily more difficult, maintenance than an airhead or a Flying Brick. Mainly because it has a complete set of cylinders more.
But the clutch is easier to replace/maintain and the chain is easier to lube than the final drive splines.
The main issue are the carburettors. Many say, however, if the CBX is ridden daily or regularly, they are less of a problem.

All good advice. Thanks. I'm hoping that the CBX is no worse, maintenance wise, than the aging R1150RT. I also want a bike that won't depreciate further. In the RTs defense though, it has been a fantastic daily commuter. Quick, nimble, AWESOME brakes, year-round protection and parts are always available...at BMW prices. But I've always loved Honda's 80's styling and that fantastic 24v 6cyl. The CBX carbs can't be any worse than getting Bing throttle-bodies synced to get rid of the dreaded surge on an 1150...Which I have done.

I feel uneasy to make any other comments here. I own a 1999 R1100RT. I would never dare to hold the CBX to the same requirements as far as maintenance and reliability are concerned. After all, we are talking 20 years of age difference here.
