Cam chain adjuster oil leak

Having ordered the plug I took another look and wondered whether if I pushed it in with a socket it would stop the leak. So with a small socket on an extension I gave it a good push and I have had no leak since. Received my new plug today.....excellent!

..are you saying you pushed the old plug further in and that stopped the leak You did not install the new one..

You got it right. Gave the old one a good push with a small socket and no further leak. Have a brand new plug in a Honda bag if you need one!

Yep, but after its nut and bolt restoration, not 100% sorted yet

Schweeeeeeeeeeeeet......... just hope you ride it and not put it away because it's too perfect.

That's the real challange in all this...... ride 'em and then clean them up like new again...... year after year......after year. That's why they were made.

I replaced this thing only once on a head. I used Yamabond (spelling?) because my dealer didn't have Hondabond that I asked for.

Do NOT pry the plug out, it is a hollow brass plug with a rubber coating, just drill a small hole in the center of the plug taking care not to drill too far, just pierce the plug enough so you can get a small machine screw started, once the screw is started its easy to work the plug out, last time I checked the plug was still available.

EMS & Jeff, Pushing the plug in with a socket only lasted a couple of months and then it started weeping oil again. I followed your advice and drilled a small hole in the center of the plug. As I did this the plug began to rotate and came out with the drill. Cleaned up the hole and pushed the new plug in with some Hondabond and no more leak!

I have a question for you CBX experts.

Are there different sizes on this adjuster bolt / locknut (see Aris' linked photo)?
The parts list shows a two different part numbers for the bolt. The locknut is listed as an 8mm or a 10mm size.

On both my 1979 and 1981 engines, the adjuster bolt looks identical (8mm).
The 8mm locknut on my 1979 engine is correct, and looks like the picture above.
However, the 1981 engine had a standard 8mm nut. When I went to check it against the HONDA parts list, it says it's supposed to be 10mm.

I'm going to use an 8mm thin lock nut, but WTH is up with a 10mm nut in the parts list?

The bolt/locknut config is different on the '80-'82 than the '79. The later bolt does not have the o-ring groove. The later nut has an o-ring groove in the flange. And I think it's 10mm vs 8 mm on the early one. Most of the early ones stripped out hence the change. You'll see the difference in the parts if you look closely on the parts picture.

The cam chain adjuster bolt on my 1981 school engine (black, stamped April 6, 1981 on rear of transmission case) is 8mm diameter threads and has an o-ring groove around the mid-point of the length of the bolt.

So it should be a 10mm diameter bolt with no o-ring groove for this period?

The cam chain adjuster bolt on my 1979 engine is exactly the same.

Bottom line - I'm going to get a new 8mm thin locknut for both.
