Should I be tring to adjust the Spark advancer if the bike seems to be running quite well?

Adjust ? No Duane, it's a none adjustable (for most) mechanical device. Just check its function, which is to automatically advance the spark as the revs increase... The ignition timing is adjustable by the positioning of the pickup plate...
