Another new CBX Owner from Maple Glen, PA

Hello Everyone,
Recently purchased a '81 from another forum member. Still getting acquainted with her, but she runs great for having 70K+ miles. Immediate issues I will need to look at include ... the bike seams to be a little cold blooded, quite a chatter at idle, and a very slight oil leak. But so far I'm very happy with how she rides, especially at speed. I also own a '79 CB750F and an '82 CB900F. Looking forward to cleaning her up, learning what I can, and putting on lots of miles n smiles!

The X is just as addictive as the F.
At least you will know where to find some shims.

Welcome, Izzy! I am sure you will have some fun with your CBX once you get to know it a little better. All Hondas are a little "cold-blooded", especially the CBX, if you are referring to a slightly sluggish response when cold. Don't be tempted, however, to run it on choke for too long after start-up.
Difficult to diagnose the "chatter at idle" without actually hearing it. As you have a Prolink, I think we can eliminate the common clutch rattle that is prominent with earlier models. It could be the alternator drive.

Since you don't know the service history it may also be time to check the valve clearances and adjust the cam chains.

After reading through as many starting posts as I can find, I think I'm understanding and learning how to coax the ice queen to start in the mornings
Here is what seems to work for me ... A good dozen throttle twists to help prime the carbs, one or two start attempts, another couple of throttle twists, hold the choke with the thumb and viola! For the past few days I have been able to start her on the third attempt when totally cold. When stopped for a short while it seems just holding the choke with the thumb does the trick.
I have my grubby hands on a service manual so I plan to go through every check which hopefully will help be diagnose and hopefully fix the clutch chatter at idle ... I am far from an experienced mechanic, but am willing to learn ... we'll see.

Does your clutch work okay except for the clatter at idle?
Maybe a carb synch would help like it does on the early models.
In the cooler months the starting method for my '81 is very similar to yours.

Yes clutch works great. Only issue is chatter at idle. I'm living with it for now while reading on how and what I will need to attempt the carb sync.
As for the starting, I have run 2 cans of seafoam on two subsequent fill ups ... Bike now starts on first or second try in the mornings as long as I prime a few times and hold the choke with my thumb. Obviously I don't know for sure but would like to think the Seafoam has helped.
