Been having a problem of late with my volt meter fluctuating. If the engine is warm or cold it does it. It will go down to almost nothing then spike up to near 12v then bounce around. I have not driven it much over the summer, only local rides to keep the fuel fresh and battery charged...which the battery seems to have a good charge on it and starts the bike no problem.



I put a vom on the batter and it shows right at 12v. I have not clipped the probes on the battery and watch to see if the vom is showing the same as my volt meter on the bike.



I was wondering if my alternator is going TU or if I can change the brushes in the alt?

Had a similar problem on my 82 but never on my 79. Always had good recharging ability. Turns out the ground connection was faulty inside the guage panel. Went thru 2 meters before realizing it. The needles would swivel from lo to hi at high speed until they broke off altogether or in half. I have one on now that only has half the needle left but since solving the grounding problem, no more wiggle and I can still read the volts, just a tad above 13 as usual, on both bikes. Check those connections along with the rubber anti-vibration washers or grommets.
