valve timing

how well can a CBX run if the valve timing is off?

One tooth off and the bike will run reasonably, any more - not so much, or to the point of valve/piston contact. Do you suspect it's off, or have you observed that it is?

the reason I ask is that the marks on the intake cam sprockets don't seem to line up perfectly with the cyl head surface.
