Re: 20 years of....Building the dream......
Is it a stock '79 clutch?
Were the rubbers in good shape?
No doubt you know about it but here are replacement parts available.

Bert wanted to sell me that clutch fix on my visit to Six Center but I figured it was above my tech skills.

Re: 20 years of....Building the dream......
It feels very tight between the drive gear and the basket....but I can't find my socket for the clutch nut. So I haven't had a chance to really get a good look in that area.

Re: 20 years of....Building the dream......
With new rubber bumpers/bushings in place.....how long will that last?
Is that designed for stock horsepower engines,...or are they designed to take more abuse than stock?
What kind of set up does the 80-82 have....just more bushings...like 3 more? Or springs instead....
I see where tim's does one with springs like all my Suzuki's have...not the cheap route, but probably last the life of the engine?
My sprocket does have the slightest perceivable bit of movement....I'm guessing a little more power will only make that worse?
yea...I guess there are a lot of questions there.....

I think most of your answers will be in this thread. viewtopic.php?f=25&t=7748
When you say a bit of movement in your sprocket, which one are you referring to?

Re: 20 years of....Building the dream......
The driven gear and the clutch basket...is what I was referring to....
Out of the 3 options, which is the best long term...I realize springs can weaken as well as rubber disintegrates?
What would be the smartest to find for a hard ridden bike?
Not a member of cbx world.. Can't open link within link.
Thanks for the input
I can do the new rubbers on mine... But it looks like the 79 is the worst choice to use...
If I'm going to do it, might as well do it right and go the best route.

Re: 20 years of....Building the dream......
The best option is to get a Prolink clutch with the torsion springs. But you will have to get the sleeve, or what Honda called the "outer clutch guide", 22116-MA2-000 also. otherwise the basket will not work correctly.
A complete Prolink clutch assembly may cost you $400-500, not necessarily with good plates. People who have them, know how sought after they are.

Re: 20 years of....Building the dream......
My hub seems pretty good still, so while I break in the new pistons, I'll use it as is.
When break in is over and I can run it as hard as I want, I'll try to have a 81-82 clutch to swap in when I change the oil.
I have reasonably new plates in the clutch I have now, and heavier springs....so a 81-82 basket with worn clutches wont matter.
Unless those are different too....guess I better check that also again....
Nothing on Ebay worldwide or Yahoo Japan available at the moment....I have till mid spring to find one, since weather here usually sucks till then.
Time to bolt it back together and see if I solved at least part of my issues with clutch feel.
Now that I can run the bike without a battery charger hooked to it, maybe I'll go up the road, hopefully with nothing breaking or falling off....

I bought it for my girlfriend, as she fell in love with the new/old SR400 Yamaha came out with last year.
She said she would get her license for a bike like that....but at $5999, I started the search for an original SR500 instead.
The engine is kind of the polar opposite of the CBX, but it does have it's own character and feel. And the bigger 38 mikuni and pipe make it thump hard.
Yes....I've been looking at modified SR's for days now.....
Too many choices.....

Excellent decision on the SR instead of the clutch. It is a beauty.

Re: 20 years of....Building the dream......
These were actually my high school dream bikes back in 78
It seemed like a great bike for a beginner like me, that I could actually ride, when I first saw them in the magazines.
I still have posters of them from the Yamaha dealer, when I drooled over them in the showrooms.
A few years later I got a used 78 XS400 as my first bike....close but not near the same....
Now I finally have one....well now my girlfriend does anyway
