Help! Honda no longer has part #90458-703-000 - referred to as a thrust washer 28mm. I am missing this very important washer that is used against the spring and plate in the alternator. I have called several places and can not find one. What I am looking for is someone that may have an extra one or at the very least provide me with the dimensions. I need to know the approximate thickness of the washer. Anyone with an extra one please let me know the cost. Thanks

Thanks Jeff and Neil for your imput. I contacted Dave in Norfolk, and he has been kind enough to take some measurements on the sizing of the thrust washer. He told me that one of the washers between the spring and the plate in the alternator is plastic, but he was not sure. Anyone else know? I am still looking for the washers if anyone has one. Jeff, the cbxman conversion looks great, had I not already spent $$ on duplicate alternator parts, I would be ordering the conversion right now. If you know of anyone that needs a new-(re-wound) stator or rotor, I have an extra.
Whats more important is the length of the spring, they sack w/ age and heat. I replaced mine last month, it was approximately 3-4 mm shorter than the new piece. Add to that wear on clutch plates (another mm or 2 shorter), no wonder it was slipping and not charging. A new spring and clutch plates still available new.

The thrust washer (metal) is 1.5 mm (0.060") thick.
The plastic "special washer" is 2mm (0.080") thick.
The spring free length is about 29.5 mm (1.16")
I say "about" because the upper and lower surfaces are not exactly paralell
Wear measurements on the clutch plates can be easily measured as follows. The oil grooves on the splined clutch are .5 mm (0.020") deep
The coupling plate that is bolted to the alternator shaft has a slight counterbore on the inner edge of the mating surface. That too, is .5 mm (0.020") deep.
If your spring is sacked be careful. YOu don't want to overshim and bottom out the coils against each other. Additionally you don't want to place too much load on the alternator bearings. They're the real weak spot. They are not thrust bearings. There are no sealed thrust bearings. They are the same bearings as used on the wheels. They live forever there, 'cause theyre being used as they are designed to be. But not in the alternator. Change 'em every time you change your brushes. Dirt cheap compared to clutches and springs that will toast if the bearings freeze.
