CBX Rim Size

Post by John S. (5594) »

Hello amd welcome,

The rim size on the '80 CBX (A Model) is MT2.15x19 front (WM3) and MT2.50x18 rear. The MT codes are in inches. If I recall correctly - OEM tires on the '80 were were Dunlops - 3.50V19 F11 front and a 4.50V18 K127 rear.

Hope this helps - but be sure to read some of the many posts here in the "Tires & CBX Rims" section - lots of good information on this subject.

Cheers,

John

Thanks for the info folks. Reason I'm asking is I have the opportunity to buy a set of wheels off of a CX 650 Turbo. Anyone try these on a CBX? The front is 2.5x18 and the rear 2.75x17. Smaller in diameter but wider. Any problems with fitting on a stock swingarm??

there are alot of honda parts that interchange with cbxs....

i say give it a try and advise us how it turns out

i think the only negative thing we know now before you try it is the cbx front fender will have 1/2 inch or more clearance with turbo 18" front rim than with 19' cbx front rim

>>>>

this will also change your gearing with top speed in your cbx being lower if you use the 42t stock cbx rear sprocket with the turbo 17" rear tire due stock cbx being 18" rear tire

acceleration will be better which depending how you look at might be a minus to you if your ride superslab alot.....or if you like digging out of turns ....a plus

>>>>

to find out how many equivalent teeth just this tire change yields....simply take the new rear tire 17" diameter (get it from mfg www page) and divide this into 26" (stock cbx rear diameter more or less)....then multiply this by 42 (stock cbx rear teeth) to get equivalent teeth just the tire change will result in if keep using the 42t rear sprocket

>>>>

to calc rpm increase take the new rear tire 17" diameter (get it from mfg www page) and divide this into 26" x stock rpm at any speed

>>>>

if you take above equivalent teeth from above.....and deduct 42....this is the number of teeth you will need to reduce the stock cbx 42t sprocket to get back to stock cbx gearing. my guess is you will need a 39t or 40t rear sprocket to get back to stock if you want this

>>>>

to find out effect on top end = (new 17 inch rear tire diameter / 26") x 130mph which it early model top end more or less. i think you will find you will be in low 120 mph range

>>>>

gearing is the great equilizer on cbxs......its really the cheap mans 1170 kit if you will ....and as long as you stay in the twisties and off interstates/long top end runs.............you might like what you get with the new 17" rear rim. i do

>>>>>

warning: i developed all the above myself so they are probably wrong. point is using the turbo 17' rear rims with stock x 42t sprocket will change your gearing

Dohhhh. I knew that too but it didn't even occur to me concerning the shaft drive. Maybe the guy has got his bikes mixed up.

Thanks Mike for the simple math. I figured there would be a change but hadn't sat down to do the math as yet. I'm more a flat land rider. Not too many twisities in my neck of the woods.

What are the size of the rims on a CB1100F??

This is a link to a picture of the wheels I am looking at buying. Are they actually from the Turbo? What do you think is a fair price fro the wheels. Supposedly in excellent condition off of a school bike.

are these the rims from the page you posted

cbx4evr

do you think these are the rims on the cbx on the page you ref

http://www.bol-dor.dk/engelsk/index.htm

>>>>

i think these same rims or style were on the 1100f canada models. james elliott has a set on his 80 and you can e him for e photos. these had a light gold finish btw

>>>>

as far as width these rims....they really dont add much performance benefit over stock cbx rims though the are an inch lower on each end. they do look great though

>>>>

you asked about usa 1100f rims and they were cast, again an inch lower than the cbx at each end..... not nearly as handsome as the rims you posted ....but had the advantage of kosman being able to weld up the rear rim to 4.5 or more.... and house a 160.

then you got an all new problem......a 160 will not fit any stock cbx arm...

another topic/another time

best
