CBX VIN

Post by twinegar »

Is anyone keeping track of VIN's? The '79 CBX I am picking up tomorrow is apparently the 32nd production CBX built. Anyone else care to list the last 5 numbers just to see what is out there still? Is there any advantage to having an early one?

There are a few guys on this forum that are knowledgable/interested in old VIN X's.

I have a fairly old '79 and think its cool. Someday, the real old ones may be of higher value.

Here is the link to a discussion..................

I took a look and they are mostly concerned about how many per model year with each adding the highest VIN seen.
Thanks.

I just took another look and the guy dropped a digit when he emailed the VIN. He sent 200074B. If he dropped a zero I am good but if the B is actually a digit then it is a late release. Either way I am getting a garage kept, second owner bike with 12K on it. After all the new/old parts arrive I will wind up with 2 very nice CBX's. My 69 CB750 with the original #140 main jets is bad but I bet the 79 CBX is way badder. I will add the VIN's when I get home from picking them up tomorrow.

The VIN-number is very likely CB1-20 00748. The number pattern is CB1 and 20 for the 1979 CBX, the last five digits are the serial number. The first frame number officially for sale by Honda in the U.S. was 20 00042.
There are some that are lower, which were bikes that were used for press introduction and tests and later made it into public hands somehow.
We are both inetersted in high numbers - to get closer to the estimates of how many were built - and low numbers, to find the oldest surviving species.

cbx Vin some more facts

Post by cbxmel »

Hi,My postimg on cbx numbers gives details of sandcast cylinderhead 28
which is an early pre production one which was originally fitted to one of the Honda UK press test bikes and had no side bolts to the head. The camshafts are completely hollow compared to production ones and each clamp holding the camshafts is individually engraved with its number.eg ex 1,in 3 etc.The head is off one of five Honda press fleet bikes used by the track marshalls at the Isle of Man TT in June 1978.There were four silver ones and one red.I understand there was only one sandcast machine of which I have the few parts mentioned here. All the rest were standard production machines with the side head bolts fitted.Alan(Kipper)Killip the chief marshall at the TT was a guest of honour at the UK club rally some years ago and has confirmed the facts. The machines were subsequently offered for sale to the journalists who rode them at £800($1600) and nobody wanted to buy them.Ouch!!! Wonder what they would be worth today? They were all subsequently destroyed but an ex Honda employee managed to retrieve the items I now own.Bob Berry who was then editor of MCN(motorcycle News) the largest mass circulation motocycle paper in the world was one of those journalists and regrets to this day not taking up the offer to buy.He was the first western journalist to ride the cbx at the Honda test track at Suzuka in November 1977.He has gifted to me the original pictures taken at Suzuka which will go into my cbx book when complete. They are in black and white but I also have a collection of colour pictures taken at the time by another journalist John Nutting which are all in colour. There only appears to be one red machine at the test and all the others are silver. As well as the cylinderhead number 28 I have the oil filler cover ,clutch cover and oil pump. The oil filler cover is rather crudely made and not as smoothly cast as the production items.Hope you guys find the above of interest. Ride safe. cbxmel ICOA 1876

I was chatting to some Welsh bikers on the Brecons, one of which recalled seeing very early CBXs on The Island. At the time I thought they were "confused" but on reading a writeup in the UKCBXCLUB magazine, it all came together.... 8)

Mel:
Thank you for all your work on this topic and for passing along the info.

Mike:
I think you are correct in that Twinegar's serial # is really 748. It is still a fairly early one that would have smooth studs and the few other quirks of the first 3000 or so. Good discussion!

CBX VIN AND THERE'S MORE!!!

AND THERE'S MORE!!!!

DAVE,Many thanks for your kind comments.Much appreciated. I know in some circles I might be thought to be crazy but I think in one hundred years time when we are all at that cbx garage in the sky somebody might be interested in the facts about the early cbx.I hope so!!?

ICOA member Ed Willett from Scotland recently put together an article in the summer issue of the Uk club mag cbx rider about the early 79 with information supplied by Asmund Olason who is a Norwegian member of the UK club which may interest you guys over there. Asmund owns cbx number 14 and another guy from Norway Roger Helgerud owns number 13 which was bought from a guy in Sweden by the name of Albert Fishback. It is documented that the Swedish bike came to Sweden very late in 1977 and was raced in Sweden for a number of years and then crashed. This damaged the original sandcast head(the one with no outer cylinderhead bolts) and was replaced with production head and barrels.
I have seen a picture of vin plate for number 13 which clearly shows CB1-2000013 and the crankcases are also stamped 13 and are not the smooth finish of the production model. When I have more information I will update you. All the best cbxmel ICOA1876

Mel:
A few of us over here are VIN number nuts also. Those early test models are very interesting. Do any you know have the tach driven from the intake cam? A few pictures I've seen did. Some photos of these early ones would be very interesting.
Some very early production CBXs have shown up recently. As EMS said, #40-something is in Ohio. I know of several in the 100s and 200s. My '79 that I bought new in July of '79 is #1917. The dealer actually replaced the smooth studs in my engine under the 'recall' notice.
We also find tracking the '80 models' serial numbers very interesting. Did you folks over the pond get many true '80 models?
I also have an '82 with matching engine and frame numbers, if you find that interesting. Keep the info coming!

AND THERES EVEN MORE!!!!

Dave, From the researches done by Ed Willett and myself we know ICOA member Nick Hare from the UK owns CB1-2000048 the 7th production 79.
The first one imported into France was CB1-2000021 and James Elliott
in Canada owns CB1-2000032 with motor CB1E 2000037 and we are also aware there is another 79 CB1-2000043 with motor CB1E-2000062 in Canada. Those three being sandcast engines. From our researches we have worked out there were 41 pre-production frames and 59 pre-production motors.(all sandcast) Will let you know when I have more information and if you have any info from your end please let me know as always interested to hear from you guys over the pond.
Especially about high vin numbers to tie in with the production figures I posted on the how many cbx built thread. All the best Mel

Dave, Forgot to say I have seen a number of pictures of the tacho drive being driven off the inlet cam.In the German Motorrad mag Jan 78,Dutch Motor mag Jan 78,Canadian Honda brochure clearly shows tacho running off inlet cam plus the round anti vibration rubbers between the fins on top of the head.I also have these on my cyclinderhead number 28 and not the square production ones.Honda Uk brochure 1978 shows off inlet also as does German Honda brochure 78 but Canadian Honda brochure of 79 shows mix of inlet and exhaust tacho drive.Uk's motorcycle weekly Dec 77 clearly shows tacho off inlet as does French Moto Revue of Dec77 plus another picture off exhaust.Uk Motorcycle Mechanics mag Oct 78 shows clear pictures of the Honda UK training school sectioned engine with tacho off the inlet and finally the Honda Uk model introduction booklet supplied to all Uk Honda dealers selling the cbx shows the tacho off the inlet on the cover but off the exhaust in the contents of the booklet. From our enquiries
only a very few of the pre-production machines were fitted with the tacho drive off the inlet, possibly as few as two.I am making furher enquiries of other cbx clubs in Europe to see if I can get any further information. all the best Mel ICOA 1876

I picked up my 2 CBX's yesterday. Nothing impressive about the VIN's other than the VIN type-o on the title of one.

Will you have a "Dream Portrait" of CBX's some day??

(The CBX side cover stickers are still available from Honda if you are trying to get your X's stock appearing)
