Not sure if this was directed to me, but my plan is to try to get the bike dialed in and running smoothly with the K&N filter, but to switch to an OEM filter if that doesn't work out.

My belief is that with the CV mechanism deleted via the new TBs, there should be no negative impact from having the filter flow a bit better. I do believe that the resonances and other flow characteristics that come from the intake trumpets and airbox are still relevant to good street manners.

At this point, both of those are basically just articles of faith, not backed by hard data.

I believe the main idea with the air box was to house/enclose the different length
velocity stacks in a filtered chamber. The key to the design is to equalize the total
lengths of the intake from the valve seat to the end of the velocity stack, the only
variable is the location of the throttle butterfly within the total length. Notice the
longest stacks are on the shortest ports and vice versa. When you go to pods, equal
length stacks or carbs that don't use the stock airbox, you lose the intended equal
length intake tract and disrupt the balanced airflow to each cylinder.
Mr. Irimajiri stated in one of the design reviews that it was the intention to equalize
port length variation caused by the necessity to pull the carbs closer together and
angle them in the V formation, all in the name of rider comfort/knee position.
Irimajiri wanted straight ports like the RC166 but was overruled by the styling engineers
and thus the compromise of intake tract design.

Note if you use carbs other than the stock CVs, the straight across bank (non V style) you
are much closer to the original equalized total port length idea as varied intake manifolds
take the place of the different stock velocity stacks in the airbox.

Well, I had just written something about header tube lengths and how they relate to IN. port

Back in the day, Rick’s Tricks sold the intake boots to compensate for a straight rack of smooth bores, they worked great.

I remember reading an article many years ago in the 90s from someone who went to the great expense of casting a new cylinder CBX cylinder head with straight intakes, they got a few more horses on the dyno, and they showed the curves in the article.


Re my new 6-2-1 exhaust:

OK, will send pics, Arrow sent me a different muffler than was ordered, a 4" longer inlet pipe that S's upward 1.5", it may be better or not.
It looks like it will start moving upward below the rear footpegs, so the clamp will go up to the rear grab rail or shock?
I'm going to take a closer look today.
Also will Cerakote my Kerker headers a Glacier Black that is formulated to withstand temperatures up to 1,800° Fahrenheit and thermal shock from those temperatures

Similar but different, Pat Mattachonei machined this CBX head for his WERA bike, 20 yrs ago to accept a bank of flat slide Mikunis.
This accomplished two things, shorter runners and a straight path to the valves.

Yes, that might be the one, I was thinking after that maybe they just machined the CBX head.
I sometimes wonder if the canted intake design created a rift at the Honda factory.

And speaking of Rick, did 'ya know he has the mate to the CBX that was given to the magazines for testing? His is red. I've not seen it, but would imagine it would be sand cast. His business is only about 85 miles from our house.

That's great! I need to lock down this one-of-a-kind 6-2-1 Arrow/ZK SS exhaust project, and Cycle Outfitters has 3 pages of clamps, etc.

This might be a good time to say that Rick Chupp is closing Cycle Outfitters. You should probably contact him sooner rather than later. I recently asked him if he was still supplying the manifolds for the carbs and the answer was yes.
