2014 AMA Vintage Days at Mid Ohio

Post by EMS »

.. and so it begins! Today is the first (unofficial day). The early bird catches the worm...A first stroll through the swap meet, which is in the middle of establishing itself, did not reveal any gems or steals. Cindy and Wes Anderson are putting their lot together. Wes has a nice original 1971 Kawasaki H1 500 for sale, which will most certainly find a buyer. Several CBXes are there. A mild custom 79 for $5,500, a 1980 in a trailer ( was there before) with an off-color red paint job and a lot of non-original parts, and a duo of Prolinks, 81 and 82 for $6,000.- each or $10,000 the pair. Florida plates. Average condition. Seller from TN. Bought them for resale and doesn't know much about the CBX. He heard, however, that they are going for close to $10,000.- a bike.. as he said, he doesn't know much about them...
Pictures will follow. Post yours here too, please.

Our impressions same as Mike's for the first day. We'll be hosting a lunch at the Honda Pavilion as we had in past times except a bit lighter. Any CBXers and guests can stop by. You're all on your own for Saturday/Sunday as we will be heading home sat at noon. Hope to see some of you there.

Friday brings more exploration of the swap meet. Here is a nice survivor. Not a "S", but could maybe turned into one...
6115

Michaels' Motorcycles is there again. Not my favorite seller, just because of the personal attitude of the guy that I experienced talking to him. Interesting bikes, though. Triumph Hurricane for $25K. Two of them, actually. One of the sold already.
6116

Has been trying to sell this one for a couple of years now.
6118

This seller was asking $6K for this one. 31k miles, and if I wouldn't have one already in the same or better condition, I would have bought this! Seriously.
6117

No matter how much you have seen, there is always something you may have never seen before. I always wonder where the people dig these bikes up???
6119

..and then there are those that you seem to see every year again and again..like this pair of "his and hers" CB900F
6120

..and of course, "Indian" is the featured marque this year! No surprise, there are some high priced specimen among the usual rusty tanks, worn sprockets and torn seats.

... stay tuned! There is more to come! :face:

Only 3 hours for me. Many come from all over the country, however.

That silver '79 at the show was a REALLY nice original with over 20,000 miles. Near showroom condition. Had never heard of the owner from Hickory NC.

The black '80 in the swap meet was a new addition since we left on Saturday. What shape was it in?

I looked very close at the silver '79 in the show, and I was a little skeptical about the "never restored -all original" claim. Some thing just did not match. The valve cover showed some wear which would be normal for the age, but the exhaust was absolutely immaculate, even at the back side of the headers. The head looked like it had been painted. To me it looked like a bike the owner was very proud of and he embellished a few thing for show purposes.

The 1980 was an absolute disaster. The seller was asking, I think, $5,500. He claimed it was running, although it sure did not look like it would or had the last 10 years. It was Japanese built bike. The only think it had going for it was the tank, which looked really great. The tailpiece needed cosmetic work, the engine cases were heavily oxidized/pitted and the shock coils were rusty. The exhaust was shot. The seller asked me, if I thought the asking price was too high and told him "yes, a tad"
My estimate was that the bike would need at least $3,000.- to bring it to the price he was asking - which I did not tell him, as he seemed to be a nice guy. Just another seller who really doesn't know what a CBX really is and what it needs in order to be a decent bike, but hears all these stories about how much they are worth.
