You show the stamped frame number in the first photo. What else are you looking for?

Didn't realize that the frame number and VIN were the same.

I have a 1980 frame #SC03-2001660 and live in Ontario, Canada, if that helps your numbers at all. Sold in Alberta in 1981, bought there in 1982 by me.

My 1980 CBX has a frame number SC03-001660, engine SC03E-2001593, and rear engine case above the swingarm 54.7.13 with 59 underneath.
So.... from what I gather it was one of the last ones made in Japan on July 13th, 1979. The engine was the 59th produced that day. Anything else I can infer from the serial numbers?
Thanks,
Norm

I heard that it is odd that the engine number is lower than the frame number, is this true?

Oops forgot. The speedo has 150 mph on the inside with 240km on the outside. Thought all 1980's were 85mph...?

85 mph speedos were only in the US, I think. Since your primary reading is in KPH, the MPH in the background would match that. Here in the US, many 85 MPH speedos got changed out for the 150 ones from the '79. Only later to be advertised for sale as 'original miles'.

Yes, you have one of the last '80s made in Japan. We reckon about 1800 were made there. Mike may have data on the highest Japan-made serial number bike in his records.

Your Speedometer is correct for a Canadian bike. It was the same as for the 79 model showing 240kph at the large scale and 150mph in the small one.
I have definite records of three 1980 Japanese models with higher VIN-numbers and the highest is 2101.
Engine numbers are a little bit of a puzzle. We had a member, John Davis, who passed away a few years ago, he had U.S. built 1980 with serial-no 00015 and engine serial 1826 which would indicate that a little more than 1800 engines were used for bikes made in Japan. So why we have 2101 serial number for a Japanese production unit is a mystery to me. U.S.-made 00103 has engine 2201.
As engine production ran completely separate from motorcycle production, there is no way to tie certain numbers together. It is quite likely, that engines were overproduced into stock in July of 1979 to prepare for start of production in the U.S. and they were not pulled from stock on a first in first out basis for running production in Japan.

Can anyone tell me where exactly the Japanese-made CBXs were manufactured? From my scanty research the only possibility I've found is Kumamoto prefecture. Ideas? I figured I've come this far, might as well see it through...

The 1979 CBX final assembly was in the Sayama/Saitama factory. Engines were made in Wako. There was production also in the Hamamatsu factory. Whether these were the 1980 CBXes, I do not know. 1981/982 CBXes came back to Saitama as is documented in the new format VIN number.

Thanks EMS.
Have a question for you frame and motor number guys on this forum. Are all wiring harnesses numbered 32100-469-0000?
:P

That is the number for the '80 harness.
The '79 harness is 32100-422-000 and '81/'82 is 32100-MA2-000

I am not sure what the difference is, but my records show the same number 32100-422-000 for 1979 and 1980 CBX. I have no reference to 32100-469-000. And while the 81/82 (MA2) wiring harness is definitely different because of additional features and different connectors, I cannot think of any reason why the 1980 should be different from the 1979 harness. Maybe I am missing something.

Well...this got me curious, so I checked the wiring harness in my 1980 Marysville CBX. And it does indeed have p/n 32100-469-0000. Note the four digits (zeros) as the version ID. Really strange. Even CSMNL does not show this as the p/n for the 80 wiring harness. Another mystery for the books.
