The front wheel on the 82 i just bought had a wheel weight on the front rim that was placed on the center edge. Apparently it came off and was ground up between the caliper and the spinning wheel (I was going around 60). Sounded strange when it let loose. Hard to describe and I guess I’m lucky the wheel didn’t lock up. See the scrapes on the spokes? Still, the bike is in excellent shape considering its age.

Usually, centrifugal force keeps them in place.

The caliper pin looks out of place too, Better check that.

Are you sure you didn't lose the bolt and pin keeper from the caliper instead?

You’re right they’re gone, bolt and keeper. So is the wheel weight. It must have been taken off when the pin keeper came loose. Thanks for noticing. Lucky I didn’t lose the pins. I hadn’t looked close enough seeing the weight was gone. Crap! Now I can’t go riding! Partzilla had the parts! Be here in a few days.

There are several witness marks where past wheel weights have been. Are you positive you even had one there in the first place? It was the steel pin keeper that did all the damage.

If you have not done so, I would check the caliper pin hole very closely. With what I see, that hole may have been elongated which will be a detriment to proper brake action. Would need caliper replacement.

Yes it was there as I recall seeing it before I test rode it. I agree that the damage to the wheel was caused by the keeper and not the mostly lead wheel weight. I’m gonna have to file those jagged edges on the spokes.

That's what caught my attention. Look at everything in that area for proper fit.

It appeared to me that the pin had elongated the hole in the caliper. Might just be an illusion in the photo. However, if it did elongate the hole any, that pin will not maintain pad alignment very well. I don't know specifically what problem that might cause. But, I wouldn't want to chance it. If needed, Louis can most likely do you a caliper. usedcbxparts.com

Got everything fixed thanks to Partzilla and Louis for suggesting them to me. Put on EBC HH pads too (they squeak a lil coming to a stop). Never heard them squeak on my other bikes. Having some Spiegler SS brake lines put on next week. Anyway, while I was down by the caliper I saw this. As I’ve mentioned, it’s been almost six years since I had my 79 and probably ten years since I had an 82 but this doesn’t look right does it? Could it just be reversed? If so can the cap be removed w/o lifting the front end?

Cap is correct, no gap to the front, gap to the rear. Front nut is tightened first,
then the rear.

Good, thank you, especially since I’ve already ridden it 500 miles. Think I’ll head mañana too but it may rain.

Anyone else getting out these days?

There is an arrow on the underside of the cap though indicating which way Honda wanted the cap to go.
