Hello.
New(ish) to the forum, but I read new posts everyday and I'm duly impressed with the level of expertise and willingness to share info.
This even sounds like a dumb question as I'm thinking about typing it, but does Honda use different part numbers for the same part on different bikes? For instance, if the same side stand is used on two different models and it's the same exact part, are the part numbers different?
I'm not so much interested in getting a cheaper price as I am looking for greater availability of parts for my 79 restoration project in general.
Specifically, I hardly ever see side stands for the 79 CBX for sale, but I see lots of side stands for other models.
Thanks.

Re: side stand and part number questions
Here is a little Honda part-number trivia:
The part number is comprised of three sections
First section - 5 digits - description of part. Example: 505540 side stand assy any bike, also for 1979 and 1980 CBX
Second section - 3 digits - Honda product/model number for bike that part was originally introduced on. Example: 422 1979 CBX
Third section - 3 digits - variation number not affecting form or function, i.e.: different color, different supplier. Example: 000 1979 Honda CBX side stand
Complete 1979 and 1980 Honda side stand number 1979 and 1980 CBX: 50540-422-000
The main/center stand number illustrates this further:
1979 CBX number 50500-422-000
1980 CBX number 50500-422-010
This means, both parts are identical and interchangeable, however, there is an "issue" variation, either material, paint or supplier.
Side stand for 1981/1982 CBX:
50540-MA2-000
The key to the whole system is Honda's "Product Number". This 3-digit number is assigned exclusively to one bike model. As soon as this number changes from part-number to part-number, the part is different.
