Cycle Magazine November 1979 - Test of 1980 CBX

Post by SteveG »

I went to a motorcycle swap meet recently to get rid of some items I no longer wanted and came home with more stuff than I left with. Oh well! I found a guy selling old magazines and had to have a look and found this magazine. I am sure a lot of you already have this in your stash, but for those who don't, this is what was being written about our beloved CBX's back in the day.

Cycle Magazine November 1979 - Test of 1980 CBX

Enjoy!

Another good 'ride', Steve. Thanks, again. Interesting looking at the power curve: They are showing a 30% loss from the crank. (Crank as stated by Honda) Typically, it's approx 15%) The torque is understandable -- little pistons don't push very hard.

I know what you mean about those swap meets -- they should be required to have warning signs at the door! :)

Remember, there is a companion article a couple of months later about the test bike (and, as it turns out, all '80s made in Japan) and the faulty advancer. This '80 road test is quite thorough and complimentary, the power numbers and dragstrip numbers are lower than Honda intended. Hence the fix.

Ahhh, yes, but power be damned, IIRC there was also an article in an *ahem* "Men's" magazine at the time, where 10,000 women all over the world were surveyed, and 85% of them said they dug the black 1980 CBX (and their riders) the most.

You just read that on the Internet, so it is obviously true!
