Tire Choice?

Post by JohnK3 »

I need to replace the tires on my 1981 CBX. I'd appreciate any input.
Wants include: Dry Grip
Don't cares include: Looks, Mileage, Cost.
Any recommendations based on personal knowledge would be valuable.
TIA,
JohnK3

We have been using the Shinko Tourmasters for a few years. Very happy with them, and they are an outstanding value.

There are dozens of tire threads to look up here. The Shinkos are likely quite fine for your needs. They are practically the only tire currently available in the correct 130/90-18 rear size. Also, do not use a 110 on the front. 100/90-19 is correct.

Dave, assuming same tires work well for 79 except for a 120 instead of 130. ?

Repeating an old caution (of sorts): If you put a /80 tire on the rear (many more options out there) it will noticeably increase the effort to lift the bike onto the center stand. Also, makes side stand much more upright. Not saying don't do it -- just saying be ware.

Just to be difficult :-) I just bought a pair of Kenda Challengers in the appropriate sizes.
If they can survive George Dillaway doing an Iron Butt "border to border" they must be OK.
Very Best,
Phil

There's a name we haven't seen in a while. I wonder how he's doing?

Either garage is too small or we have too many bikes. Or Momma's car needs to go outside.

I believe that George is doing well. He is living in Riceville Tenn.
