Anybody else out for a ride lately?

CBXs, new bikes, old bikes, cars, trucks, general chat, off topic, this is the place to post it.

BMW. Functional, utilitarian. Good things in themselves but certainly lacking any of the aesthetics of a classic. They handle and perform exceedingly well but as you say, within their design limitations.

I had another lawyer in the pits next to me at the Seniors last w/e (a rare occurrence) and he had a fairly fast Manx Norton and was leading the P3 over 60's until he was pipped on the second last lap. His other bike lined up next to the classic Manx was something of a contrast - a BMW RR1000. It had the full suite of electronic controls and was dripping with expensive go fast jewelry; a modern superbike in every sense but sat largely ignored and unused thru'out the meeting. The Manx attracted a constant stream of admirers (and is probably worth 2 or 3 RR's).

On the other hand my 74 year old mate Rob (there is a pic of him in action on CBX Racing) was out on somebody else's G50 - a Molnar no less. These single cylinder racers are quintessentially classics and look every bit the part (even the replicas). He hated it. The high pipe cooked his thigh. The beautifully crafted long alloy tank (good for 200 mile races but all show on most short circuits) pushed him into an uncomfortable crouch, necessitating large bits of foam shoved down his leathers to protect his nethers. Not very practical nor utilitarian. He much prefers his little Ninja 400 - an easy turn key racer with little aesthetic appeal and virtually no capital worth.

Now the CBX, a lightly modified 40 year old air cooled production bike with minimal electronics not only looks the part but plays the part, capable of lapping almost as quickly as a modern superbike and at half the price, too

A brace of classics. In the foreground Geoff on his '62 Manx Norton. Darren on Dave's fully faired 630 Molnar Manx and Rob on Dave's G50 Molnar (Dave in flat cap). This is what we call 'going for a ride'.

Old racers are still racers. Here is modest Rob ducking the camera as usual. Working for Mike Hailwood and spannering for the AMC team and later on the works Aermachis means a fund of great stories between races.

Had a few buddies come over last weekend and we took most of my bikes out for a nice 150 mile ride. This is outside my old Navy command (long ago abandoned and looted by locals). This is my 79 CBXs, CB1100F, Cb750F and VF1000F. Im standing by the 1100F in the Six Pistons shirt.

Wow, you're as good at posing and making photos as you are at restoring bikes!

This is the headlight I used:

While the outer edge of the lamp fit the chrome hardware finr, the lamp has a substantial rubber boot that seals the bulb and would not fit inside the bucket. I had to trim off some plastic ribbing that the boot fit over on the lamp as well. Not as water proof as designed without the boot but good enough for my use. I used this LED bulb, they typically protrude out the back of the lamp more than a halogen bulb.

A sunny morning today was good time for a photo shoot. Halfway point of my GSX project.

I've added about 15-20 already, more coming probably next winter. I was initially planning the maximum overbore but I think I'll be going with a big block, 1300cc. Other efe owners say I'll be approaching 160hp. I'll see how that feels in 2022 if I need more then it's Nitrous time or at least an extra fuel bottle painted a bright blue just for fun.
