Hey all, checked the all important numbers today as I am looking at acquiring a replacement motor as Im not confident in my ability to restore a CBX engine yet.Mine has a broken cam tower top and th bottom end looks a bit suspect also, although I havnt yet pulled the cases apart. Thats next.......

Engine number is CB1E-2004723
Frame number is 2022991, mfd 2/79
Is my engine the original - seems like I have a massive discrepancy between the numbers?
The engine Im considering buying is CB1E-2011938
Comments appreciated please.......
Thx

Hi,

Engine is a much earlier than the frame, so not original.

Engine and frame numbers are normally upto a few hundred apart - with the engine being the higher number.

Paul.

Finding a running CBX engine for sale is rare.
Personal opinion only but if it a running engine, buy it.
My days of wanting/needing originality are behind me.

Thats what I suspected.......
Is there any redeeming value in the lower numbered engine, or should I go get the higher numbered engine that is complete and running? The higher numbered engine is much closer to the frame number but just like you, Im not that much of a stickler for that detail, nor is this going to be a show bike so its all pretty much irrelevant. More importantly, Im not sure I can tackle a rebuild starting from the crank up......

What exactly is broken on your current engine? Is the entire tower broken or just a cap?
It seems to me that this engine is also already a runner. Maybe we can fix it and save you
a bunch of $$$.
In answer to your question, just putting in another engine is easy and the numbers won't
matter as it is already a replacement engine. I am still curious about your engine that is
in there now. CBX engines are pretty tough and can do 100,000 miles.
Best,
Phil

My engine has a broken cam cap.
I havnet opened up the cases so I cant say what if anything is wrong with the crank etc.
Engine was open when I got it, and the crank was exposed but it turns fine and rods go up and down, so I coated everything with preservative to keep it safe until I pull it apart...
Guess before I go any further I need to open it up Im thinkng....

A cam cap is real cheap compared to buying a new engine.

yup I let that opportunity slip by last summer, $2k for an unfinished running cafe project  ...hindsight is so easy :?

when I paid a visit to SCM Bert took me on a tour and showed me an entire wall of shelves filled with engines  ... shipping from europe would be pricey...
