Red Rubber Grease on brake master and caliper seals

Post by cross »

Hi guys,

I was just wondering if using red rubber grease on brake master and caliper seals on assembly is really needed?
I've been rebuilding brake masters and calipers many times on my life but never have used this grease. Usually i would just lube it with brake fluid
Any thoughts on this?

Thanks
Sasha

Don't know what the red rubber grease is, Sasha. However, I would stay with just using brake fluid as you mentioned. Many brake component seals are very allergic to anything petroleum related. If they are external rubber parts, a touch of silicone would be OK. Don't want it to mix with brake fluid, though.

I don't think it's petroleum based. Some brake rebuild kits come with small pouches of it. It supposedly prevents seals from drying out

Never heard of that stuff.
The articles on rebuilding calipers and master cylinders shows they are not shy in smearing the product on everything. hmmmmm.

Most interesting, Sasha. Had never heard of this RRG. Given its vegetable base, might well be worth investigating. Some type of 'grease' beneath protective seals would be useful to help prevent water intrusion/corrosion of caliper seals. Thanks.

Use the grease! It helps assembly plus it reduces corrosion inside the calipers.

I use a blue "brake caliper grease" I bought in Germany a while ago. It is sold under the "Ate" brand name. I sue it to grease the pistons and the seals in the caliper.

I've been looking and most sellers are overseas. It's going to be a while before it gets here but it doesn't matter, i have other bike to ride
