Can anyone tell me how to remove the plastic brake fluid reservoir from my 79 master cylinder

They are secured by a large O ring on the bottom of them - which gets gunged up and is pretty tight so needs to be levered off.
Easiest way is to rotate the reservoir by 90 degrees first, you can then get better access to lever it off.

A search here will reveal this has been addressed many times - but it's easy. As Paul said, rotate the reservoir, then get the largest flat screwdriver you have and pry it right off. You can choose a place that won't mark up anything.

Note that the aftermarket reservoir kits include the oring, better value than OEM.
