Odometer reset knob

Post by oldbikerdude »

This is an 82 Prolink, and am putting new rubber cushions on the rpm, speedo and voltmeter gauges.
Can someone tell me how to get the trip knob off.
Turning counterclockwise resets the trip odometer to zero.
Turning clockwise the knob turns and turns without coming off.
Does it pull off, do you have to hold the shaft and turn the knob?
There is no screw inside the hole that I can see.
Somebody, anybody.

No, the tiny screw is regular right-hand thread. Often the tiny cross fitting is rusted away and there's nothing left to grip with the screwdriver. You can drill the head off, remove the knob, then carefully extract the remaining screw. Replacements are available, not from Honda. I think they are 1.5mm.

]Hey guys thanks, I cleaned out the hole with compressed air and could see the cross pattern on the screw, once I put some light into it.
Unfortunately all my JIS screwdrivers are way too big for that little screw,
But I did get out my precision screw driver set and found one that fits into the cross pattern of the screw where I was able to get enough bite to turn the screw out. You can see how small a screwdriver I used here
With a bit of pull I was able to pull the knob off no problem after the screw was out.
Upon inspection I see that that the mating portion that the screw fits into is round peg with a flat on one side and threaded for the screw of course. The small end of the plastic knob also has a flat that fits over this peg, so that the knob fits on only in one orientation.
Also checked the parts fiche and the screw is actually an M2 x 6mm part number 90600-KJ9-700.

Gauges are back together with new cushions on the speedo, tach and voltmeter.
Also added LED lights to the speedo tach as well as voltmeter.
Speedo and tach LED's went in no issue, lots of clearance, but the voltmeter depth is shallower and LED bulb is longer than the standard bulb. So needed to extend the depth somewhat, I used a rubber piece that came from the caliper mounting bolt. It fits perfectly and gives enough standoff for the longer bulb not to bottom out inside the voltmeter, it also get retained in the shaft and won't pill out.
See the pics, not in order though.

I installed the same bulb in two voltmeters and did not have any fitment issues. I wonder what was different in your case.

Great workaround to get it to fit.

One little trick when removing smallish Philip's head screws, JIS or not is to put a dab of valve lapping compound on the tip of the screw driver or bit, the grit in the compound really helps the bit from slipping.

US Philips screw/bolt heads are designed to "cam out". it is a built-in torque limiter. I hate the things with a passion and replace them anywhere I can. In recent years "Torx" have become popular and widely available. For anything larger than 6mm, I use Allen heads.

Hey Joe, before I used that rubber spacer I tried to push the new bulb into the shaft but could not seat the rubber plug to retain it in the VM, that's why I used the rubber spacer.
Pretty sure I ordered the same bulbs as you listed.
Did yours show the difference in length as in my pic above.
Maybe your bulbs were a bit shorter.
Will check part number on my package that I ordered and report back.

Here's the part number,

Wonder if there was a shorter version, diff part number?
