How to replace footpeg rubbers

OK, I had ambitions to replace my footpeg rubbers, and bought a kit from Tim's. Searching about for clue on how to install them, I found a very old page with a bunch of tips, including this:
Foot Peg Replacement, James Elliot
Over here in North America any way .... Honda has made a replacement..
it is used on the CX 650 . and the CB 1100f ( CAN. ) bikes... over in
U.K. maybe the CB 900f ?? not to sure ..
you will need to do some work..
first get the old rubber off. no easy task.. drill, grind, sand ,, but
it will come off..
next you will need to order from your Honda part's dealer. the bolts and
screws. can be aftermarket..
2 - 50661 - 425 - 700 rubbers
2 - 50619 - mc7 - 000 special plates.
4 - bolts' ( metric )
4 -lock washer
4 - washers.
You will have to drill two holes in each peg.. straight down.. a bit
off figuring out.. and presto.. it all comes together.. Only the sick
real crazy CBX man like myself will very notice the difference.and you
will have a better riding foot rest.. that in the future will be full
replaceable..
should be able to do both pegs for under 45.00 bucks..

I dont have anything to add . . . . . but thats something I need to do also !
I'll be watching this. I can offer you a set of spare pegs I have Nils so you can take your time !

Thank you Bob, I may just take you up on that. I'm going to try to figure out a foolproof way to do this, including using countersunk screws, photograph and write this up.

Seems to me, someone made a jig to get the holes in just the right place. But, due to advancing CRS syndrome (Can't Remember S--t) the name escapes me.
This would be something that perhps could be done on an exchange basis.

Yaknow, that's a great idea. I can picture some bent metal that the peg slots into, clamps with a set screw/plate and then you drill through guide holes in the top, flip it over, countersink it if you want to have the screws flush, or simply use hex heads and be done. This would be a half-hour job per set with a jig, perfect every time.
Who's got the mad skilz with metal forming/machining?

I should be able to make a fixture. I'm a machinist by trade.I would need an sacraficial foot peg. Also, where are the plates coming from so I can get hole locations?

I'll send you my set of rubbers and plates Lee, and will see about a spare peg from Louis if nobody pipes up to offer one. This will be a great addition to the tool loaner program that is being organized now. PM me your address and they will be on their way.

Before you go to all the trouble, I would make sure that every set of plates supplied with the new rubbers are the exact same - They may not be
It would be a shame to design and build a jig to fit the set of plates Nils has bought only to discover that they are not factory made and the dimensions on them vary slightly, due to human error

Duh! I just reread what you wrote more carefully. Yes Don, you're right of course, that would mess it all up. I'll ask Bill about that, or perhaps Lee has an idea how to make them adjustable when he sees them.

Net is that you could be up to 3/16 or so off (as long as the distance between the holes was precise) and still properly align the rubber to the peg once you 'clamped' it down by tightning the screws. These are pure aftermarket as far as I can tell, BTW, not Honda pieces.

http://www.usedcbxparts.com has volunteered a free set of pegs for the project. As soon as I get them I will mail them off to you Lee, along with the rubbers and the plates.

That was my point Mike - They're aftermarket pieces and unless the plates were drilled with some precision, the distance between the holes could vary some from set to set, making a universal jig not worth pursuing
So long as they're factory made pieces with exact dimensions (as opposed to someone cutting and drilling the flat bar in his garage), the jig idea should work fine
