HELMET HOLDER

Post by twinegar »

If there aren't any screw heads on the back side of the frame and helmet holder do I assume that they are either twisted or ground off? Anyone know if the screws are soft enough to drill out with a hand drill or will I need a drillpress?

Twinegar, are you talking about the helmet/security cable lock on the rear left of the frame in front of the rear shock on the 1980 ? I had to remove mine to accommodate Ohlins & "I think" it was held by two screws from the rear, which I simply removed ??

I was afraid of that. I have ran into several small problems like that making this restoration a challenge. Some or maybe several heavy handed owners have littered my way with these annoying things.
Thanks.

twinegar, I believe that you will find a metal plate covering the screw heads. Bend it upwards out of the way and it will expose the screw heads. I think the plate was put there to make it difficult to get to the screws to steal your helmet and holder. Hope this helps.
Best,
Phil

Phil may have solved the mystery.. I had a slight mishap many many years ago, forgetting that my security cable was still attached... Yes, alcohol was involved..

In my refurb of 1985 I may have removed the cover plate to tidy the area up ??

It's a little blurry but you can see the back side of the lock here:

Twinegar, Center punch the "heads" & use a left hand drill bit of base thread diameter & they should fall/screw right out...

twinegar, that picture bears no resemblence to any cbx helmet holder that I am familiar with. It appears to be attached to the seat?

The picture shows the back side without the security plate and it is indeed attached to the frame.

twinegar,
Perhaps it is just the angle of the photo, I just went and examined one of my locksets and the two screws are parallel to the helmet locking pin. The screws go through the frame bracket into the lock. I am still confused by what I am looking at in your picture. I guess I better look in my manual.

These are bolts, that were only meant to be screwed in.
They had a head on a thinner stem, that would break off when a certain torque level was reached.
I was able to remove them some years ago, using a channel lock.
During the rebuild of the bike I used that same channel lock to fasten them again.

There isn't enough sticking out to get hold of so I will have to use a reverse drill bit. I painted it with the frame and will probably just clear the paint off the chrome cylinder and paint in the red and leave it.
Thanks.
