IT'S A DRY HEAT! 1979 CBX restoration adventure

Hello all!

This is the start of my restoration. It will be chronicled here and youtube. I'm not an expert at posting crap, so this will be a learning process for me. I have a full time job and 4 teenagers so when I'm not wishing I was in a different universe, I try to work on the bike. Well...I guess I work on the bike to keep from going insane also :lol: . So I will post things on this thread as I get to them and I can afford to do them and I apologize for it not being regular. I already have videos ready to edit. I just need to make time and do it. I hope to learn more and contribute back. I'm in the disassembly phase at the moment. Thanks everyone!!

Welcome! Your CBX looks to have very good bones and should be a very nice example when done. Our very own Nils lives just down the road from you and I'm sure will chime in. He has been through many of these and is a wealth of information that I'm sure he'll share. That said, keep posting here of your progress, troubles, problems, whatever. We'll do what we can to help out.

BTW, those headers outside are stock Honda, but nearly worthless as they are now.

Great introduction.
Can't imagine how you would find the time but certainly happy to follow along on your restoration be it stock or custom.

Thanks for your comments and support everyone. Here is my first post of the disassembly. In the beginning, I took mainly pictures for my own benefit, so my first videos will be comprised of still photos. It was only after I got the bright idea to post stuff to youtube, did I start making videos. If someone has used a good mini tripod that will hold a cell phone to record, is recommended and not a fortune, I'd like to know. I have a full size tripod for my Nikon, but nothing for a cell phone yet. That would help me make better videos.

Great start! FWIW, there are two washers under each valve spring assembly.

Dave, yeah that error would be because those pictures are a few months old. I guess I should have said make sure to get all the washers. I don't remember detail of what happened, but I know I accidentally found the one on the table. I then realized that there were more. I didn't see them because they blend in so well to the head especially when they are stuck on by oil adhesion. And it's been a loooong time since I've had that head apart. Thank you for the clarification that people need to be on the lookout for TWO washers under the springs.

Okay, so I arrived at a point where I need special tools. First are the wheel bearing retainers. Second is the steering stem (there are two nuts I believe?). I've searched the forum and anything on the steering stem seems to be about 7 years old. Any link is bad. I will do a search for the bearing retainers. Any idea where to get the steering stem sockets or the best sized sockets to use to make them from? Same for the retainers. Money matters since I'm buried past my eyeballs in attorney fees. My wife has the nastiest ex on the planet. Enough said. Thanks.

David Silver Spares USA carries all the special sockets you need except the top bridge retaining nut tool. I do have to say that you can make the tools from appropriate standard sockets, but a couple of bucks saved there pales in comparison to what you'll be spending to restore the bike. But I'm guessing you know that already. It is near impossible to restore these bikes, and do it right, on a tight budget.

I went through two boxes of old stuff I've kept forever. I won't throw away original things I take off the bike because you never know if you'll need it. After going through this restoration, I'll know for sure what to keep or use. The big red box has the old pistons and rings. I found a felt washer that's hidden in the picture! I know I can use that. Most of the parts are parts that I replaced with something else. Funny thing is I have no idea why I have the stator. I don't remember replacing it or where in the world I would have gotten another one, even if it was 25 years ago. Kinda like opening a box of chocolates. :think:

Got a couple of those boxes as well.

Make sure you keep ALL of the airbox parts and brackets. They can be difficult to find and expensive to purchase.
