I used a "flexible" semi gloss black especially for plastics ( car bumpers etc. ) that I purchased from J.C Whitney. Been flawless for years....

Actually my 1980 came with unpainted covers so it was the bare semi gloss plastic. I painted them as I was tired of using Armorall...

I found it to be a perfect match Carl the only problem being the preparation. Lots of these "color back" & plastic preservatives are liquid teflon based. Normally not a problem as can be removed withe MEK, Toluolene or Acetone. Problem there being they also melt "plastic" so care is required... :?

If it goes on a black bike and you try to match the black of the tank and the fenders, any paint shop will be able to match that pretty much exactly. Other than with the Candy Glory Red and maybe to an extend the Perseus Silver, the gloss black paint is very easy to match. Larry's bike is red, I believe, so he doesn't really have a matching issue.

It seems to me the answers are going in different directions.
I guess Carl needs to clarify what "black" he wants - the matte finish of the 79 and some 80s or the gloss black finish of some other 80s. And does he want to "match" the original color of the sidecover or the rest of the black bodywork. :?

I don't think the 1979 sidecovers were painted. They were plastic finish and had some kind of clear protective coating on them like the rear fender and the airbox sides.

Dupli-Color

Dupli-Color semi gloss black. I used it on my 79 "X" and it matches the other cover.
