Clutch basket wear...how much is too much?

Post by JLeather »

I'm doing a clutch on my '82 with ~37k miles. The clutch was dragging in spite of repeated adjustment, and there was evidence that someone else had already done a clutch, so I figured maybe it had poor quality aftermarket plates in it. I bought a set from Tims to replace it. I found some pretty sigificant wear on the outer clutch basket fingers that may also be contributing to the dragging issue. How much is too much, and can I do anything about it? Just file it down carefully as much as I can?

Aftermarket plates are a known issue. Particularly Barnett. They will drag.

Filing the fingers will allow a smoother release but, the added clearance will provide more noise.

Trading a headache for an upset stomach, IMO.

Your '82 basket in inherently quieter, but as JR said, filing the fingers will increase the play in the basket full of plates, resulting in more chatter. Deeply notched fingers are a problem though. I smooth them a bit sometimes.

I opted to file the notches down. I figure it can't really make it rattle much more if I only go as deep as the notches are already worn. Guess I'll see...

I'm not an expert but the clutch doesn't seem noisy to me (see video). I will say the shifting is night and day better now. Before the bike didn't like to downshift unless you rev-matched it. Now it shifts like I'd expect a japanese motorcycle to.

Excellent! Your bike is very quiet, especially since cell phone vids are always a lot noisier than the actual bike.

Thanks. It's way quieter than either of my CB750's so I figured it must be ok.

For my ´75 Yamaha, the OEM Service Manual recommends to carefully file down the marks on the clutch basket. Good old times, not imaginable for todays bikes
