INSTALLING A PROLINK CLUTCH INTO A 1979 ENGINE
Hey all, Ive been given a later clutch to mount into my 1979 engine [which is the subject of much discussion in another thread] and wanted to know what changes I have to make to install the later [spring shock] clutch.
Ive been given the entire clutch and fittings as well as the clutch cover, so if any parts need to be swapped then I have everything.
Comments please.....
Al

Al do a search, there are plenty of detailed threads on the subject. That spring dampened basket clutch is usually described as a “Prolink clutch” from the 81-82 bikes, A great upgrade IMO.

Main thing you need is the shorter collar and TWO thrust washers. FWIW, most 'complete' Pro-Link clutches for sale lack some or all of these.

Re: INSTALLING A PROLINK CLUTCH INTO A 1979 ENGINE
actually my good buddy Ted gave me everything including the cover in case there was a difference [there isnt], so I have lots including both the spacers....now installed and good to go.
Im looking forward to a rattle free ride....well after I deal with the alternator rattle of course. Im maybe going to have my machinist look at creating some sort of moderately priced interface maybe using an oldham coupling or a short splined sleeve although I suspect it would be as noisy as stock.
Thanks for the guidance

Re: INSTALLING A PROLINK CLUTCH INTO A 1979 ENGINE
well I spoke too soon didnt I........
Went today to lock everything up and the clutch just wont sit right and my opinion is that its the length of the bush causing the problem. The bush included with the 82 clutch is the same length as the one in the [original] 79 clutch, so it seems obvious that the bush is too long. I have all the correct spacers so that isnt the issue......
Can someone give me a dimension [length] for the 82 series clutch bush please?
Thanks
Al

43.55 mm for the later bush, 45 mm for the earlier one.
Thanks to Bill at Tim's for the information.

Re: INSTALLING A PROLINK CLUTCH INTO A 1979 ENGINE
oh this engine is gonna be the death of me......
I had a local machine shop reduce one of the bushes[#6 on the parts diagram] to 43.55 mm, lined up all my parts, installed everything in accordance with the parts diagram with the first shim behind the pump gear, and the second 32mm shim under the clutch plate centre hub, while making sure that the tangs on the back of the clutch basket went into the holes in the oil pump [driving] gear ......so far so good......
Then I installed the plates making sure that everything clicked into place, installed the 'bell' washer with the dome facing out and put on the nut, finger tight and I note that its only 50% on the shaft...damnit........
so I did it all again and again and again....same result.......
Here's the thing, if I remove the 32mm washer from inside the clutch under the hub, everything is fine but I know that isnt correct....
Then I went back to my parts pile and pulled out the original 79 clutch and installed it and the nut is still only 50% on the shaft, what the hell????????
Did my trusty mechanic install the mainshaft wrong I ask?????
What the hell am I missing on this install?
Comments and input please before I resort to an inappropriate amount of Scottish giggle juice......

both shim washers are 30mm and the cup/bell washer is 20mm as per the parts list.

You need to check and make sure that sprocket behind the clutch is on top of the bushing. It has a tendency to be behind the bushing while you are installing the clutch basket etc. I think this is your issue. When you are done the nut should be flush with the end of the shaft.

Re: INSTALLING A PROLINK CLUTCH INTO A 1979 ENGINE
In addition to what Terry said, the most common problem is not aligning the split primary gear teeth to mesh completely with the clutch hub gear. It hangs up on the thin inner gear if they are not perfectly aligned. You can break teeth if you try to tighten it in that position. Shine a light into the top of the primary gear and you'll see if it's not fully engaged. The shop manual clearly explains this.

Ill bet its the split gear misalignment thats the problem - I was obsessed with the oil pump drive and didnt look at the other gear......gggrrr....
Thanks eh

The oil pump gear will sort itself out fine - the split gear will not.
