Engine Trivia of Sorts

Post by Larry Zimmer »

Bouncing through the 81/82 manual, I noticed a contradiction: In the maintenance section regarding valve clearance, it says to check the cam holder bolt torques and be certain they are 8 - 10 ft-lbs. In the engine section it lists these torques as 9 - 12 ft-lbs. Personal experience is to be careful near the 12 limit. Any casting porosity in the threads might have you stripping head threads. Time-Serts are a bit expensive. Also, torque spec for a 10.9 grade 6mm bolt is in the 11.5 ft-lbs range. So, you'd be pushing that, too. Snapped bolts are a 'challenge' to remove from a bolt hole.
