630 Chain Length

Post by twinegar »

I just installed a new DID 630 ZL 88 link chain and it is too long. The axle is against the stops and still far from right. Am I supposed to remove a link or what? The sprockets are 15/35, correct for my 79.

If someone could just tell me how many links on their 79 630 chain that would help. Is it a normal thing to have to trim a chain down to fit? I recently bought a chain off Ebay from TAS that was a 84 link and it was too short so I am thinking 86 links might be right.

The parts fiche shows 84 and 86 link chains for the '79. Since the 84 is too short, must be the 86...

As chains are usually made to fit a variety of bikes, it is common that they need to be shortened. I rather buy a chain that is too long than one that is too short.

Thanks EMS, you confirmed what I was thinking might be the case. At first I thought the adjuster bolts were too short, not being as long as the ones on my 80 but when the axle met the stops I had to re-think that. It would be interesting to find out how a 84 link chain listed in the fiche could fit after having bought one that wouldn't. I will go with 86 after locating the old oem chain and counting the links.
Thanks.

Maybe the 84-link chain goes with the 33T rear sprocket applications.
