Socket Recommendation for Steering Stem Nut...

Post by BayArchitect »

The steering stem bearings are packed and installed, and I purchased Honda Socket #07916-3710100, and properly torqued and adusted the bearings. Page 13-41 of the Manual states "Tighten the steering stem nut" to 80-120 N-m. This nut requires a special tool, but I don't find it listed in the Manual, nor online. Where can I purchase a proper tool for this nut? (Yes, I've already tightened the nut between the steering head and the seat). THANKS!
Leon

Don't know exactly about a late model but the early model shows a 26 X 30 Lock Nut Wrench Socket PN 07716-0020100. This part is listed under "common tools" at the beginning of the Front Wheel/Suspension section.

I see what you mean...here's the '81 part number...

Post by BayArchitect »

In the '81 manual, it's shown on page 13-2, and called the "Lock Nut Wrench Socket 30 x 32mm #07716-0020400 or commercially-available tool", however, the purpose of the tool does not appear to be stated anywhere in the manual. Where can I purchase this item now? It will take weeks to get thru the local Honda dealer.... Your help much appreciated!

The purpose or use of the tool is shown in the picture next to the disassembly procedure on page 13-37. However, the size of the tool is still shown as 26x30 like the earlier model tool. All it is, is a socket with a long neck and an extension handle.

It can't be just a socket...

Post by BayArchitect »

It is a special socket with four tabs or lugs on the end. No standard socket (12 point or 6 point) will work on this nut, which is round, with square notches cut around the perimeter. Anyone know a source to purchase it?

Leon,

Four-slot locknut sockets are common fasteners for wheel bearings. OTC is a specialized supplier. Maybe you can find a source in a local automotive tool supply store.

This is a little pricey, then again...CBXes are worth upwards of $16,000.- why not buying the proper tools...

Final Report: Source for CBX Lock Nut Socket:

Post by BayArchitect »

ALP (Adjustable Locking Plier--aka, Vice-Grip) lovers, read no further. For the rest of the world, EMS did it AGAIN! The link he provided above to Kowa Seiki Tools, was a winner. For about $110, you can buy a four-piece socket set, which includes 20x24mm, 26x30mm, 17x27mm, and 30x32mm lock nut sockets, plus a handle and extension (Code #060003). If you purchase OEM tools from your Honda dealer, they source from this same company--a division of Snap-On--but you will pay more thru the dealer. I think this is a good price for these high-quality tools, and you won't round-off any more lock nuts. The web site is a bit odd: First, find the tool you want, and make a note of the Code Number. Then, call Kowa with your credit card to place the order (800.824.9655, or 562.407.5860). Very helpful people--just like Snap-On, because they are Snap-On.
Regards to all,
Leon

Addendum to Final Report: Steering Stem Socket, et al...

Post by BayArchitect »

The socket kit from Kowa arrived today, and I'm delighted to report that each component is packaged and labeled with Honda OEM stickers and part numbers. Included in the kit are the following Honda tools: 07716-0020400, 07716-0020300, 07716-0020500, 07716-0020203, 07716-0020100. The Honda Dealer will tell you some of these parts are no longer available, but here they are, from Kowa (Snap-On). What a treat to use the correct tool on this bike. All the info to contact Kowa is listed above.
Regards,
Leon

Thanks Mike and Leon for this info.

I'm going to buy a set of these tools after I get over my latest part buying binge. :)
