81/82 Handle bar switch

81 and 82 Xr's, want a sportier riding position? You can swap your handle bars to lower the grips by about 2 inches. Remove the controls/grips from both bars. Remove bars from fork tubes. Remove top triple clamp, take the right bar (rotated into riding position) and slip it over the left tube and do the the same with the left bar. Install the triple clamp and bring the bars up until they contact the pinch bolts on the triple clamp. Done. I have been riding my X like this for 20 years and have not had any problems.

When I first bought my 79 the bars were swapped and rotated like yours but I don't have anything to compare to because I swapped that setup out for the Honda Sport Kit a month later. But at least now I know others have been doing this all along.
