Kerkers and repacking

Had my Kerkers packed full and tight with packing and have just repacked with a new mat type packing. This time I wrapped them more lightly than previously with the result that there is definitely more burble on light throttle and the idle revs went up by 100. Anyone running a Kerker or other glassfibre packed cans have any similar results? Is this better than having the cans packed full and tight?
