Volt meters

Post by Marc Lamarche »

Has any one ever took on the challenge to repair a low reading volt meter, my 79 shows just over 12 volts at the meter. When I place my DVOM on the battery it shows 14.4 volts off idle.
What's inside the meter to show this current, or is this a replacement only to fix it.
I sure would like to see the actual reading, any suggestions ?
Thanks, Marc

Voltmeters........

Post by sr71cbx »

Hey Marc,
I believe a standard 2 in.diameter aftermarket automotive gauge will fit in the stock location.I've seen it done before.Use a Stewart/Warner or AutoMeter gauge, they work the best. The stock Honda voltmeter is notoriously inaccurate, they all read about a volt low.
Hope this helps, take care & ride safe.

Make sure all connectors are clean and making real good connection. A couple Ohms of contact resistance can skew the meters readings.
Remember when baseball cards in the spokes transformed any bike into a motorcycle?

Later model Gold Wings used a much better meter, and it will fit in the hole on our CBX's and look fairly authentic.

Check out eBay auction #2407749928 for a good look at one (sold for $48, I think)

Voltmeter off

Post by Dave Ditner »

Why bother changing it? If you know that it's a volt or so off , and you know what it reads when you get 14 1/2 or so measured to the battery to the battery, just use it as a trend indicator. You know where it's charging. 8)
