I don't know if I've ever replaced the square o-ring.

Re: Alternator Refurb
I ordered a new O-ring from Honda, they said it was on backorder, but they didn't say it was NLA.
I haven't received it yet. So I reused used the old one for the time being. its not in bad shape.
I did notice that the profile on one side was a bit rounded and the other side was square.
I do remember when fiddling with it that it fit better with square side into groove as opposed to the rounded side into the groove.
It didn't quite seat a 100% with rounded (larger) side into groove.
Pretty sure it was installed correctly but now you got me wondering.
Will pull it off to double check. Thanks for the tip.
Also didn't know about the Hylomar, that's a great tip, thanks for this one. Will see if I can pick some of this stuff up.
Just as an aside, the bottom of the gasket I got from Honda, has a very smooth surface, a slippery sheen to it, I'm guessing it will prevent the gasket from sticking to the surface when getting it apart.

Looked up the Hylomar line, they make quite the range of products, looks like a business in Mississauga, Ontario carries their products.Jeff Bennetts wrote: ↑Thu Jan 21, 2021 11:53 amHylomar sealer is your friend!
Gaskets, rubber or paper based will last longer if you use a light coat of Hylomar on one or both sides of the gasket. It is non-hardening and will allow the gasket to release even years later for regular maintenance without the gasket sticking to the surface and ripping. I just put a small amount between my thumb and forefinger and apply it on the gasket.
Is this the one you use?

Re: Alternator Refurb
Good point, seems most all the major chemical manufacturers have some type of their own formula of Hylomar universal blue, it’s kind of the catch all formula.

Re: Alternator Refurb
Hey Hondaman, I actually sent a message to Permatex, asking what product would be comparable to the Hylomar.
Haven't heard back yet, but will see if they come back with the same product you list above.
Canadian tire likely has this on hand as they carry the Permatex lineup.
Thanks for sharing.

Re: Alternator Refurb
Maybe call up your Honda dealer as I did.
I have ordered one from local Honda dealer, its on back order, but they didn't tell me it was NLA, so I'm assuming they are available.
I guess we'll see if they actually come through with it.
In the meantime I'm confident to use the old one. It is still flexible and not cracked, unlike the one in Nils video.

Got a response from Permatex, and looks like they recommend the Permatex Permashield 85420, which is the same as what Hondaman160 recommended above.

Re: Alternator Refurb
All I can tell you guys is that I've had more than a few alternators off of CBXs over 40 years, and unless the square o-ring is torn or otherwise pinched or compromised, it is reusable many times, without sealant. As I said above, it MUST be installed the right way or even a new one will leak.
I think they are NLA from Honda here in the US.

Tim’s still lists the square ring which does not always translate in stock.

I talked to Tim's, they are keeping the few they have to supply with the alternator conversion they sell.JoeInTUS wrote: ↑Sat Jan 23, 2021 10:39 amTim’s still lists the square ring which does not always translate in stock.

CSMNL in the Netherlands had them a few weeks ago. Euro 4.-, if I remember, shipping is outrageous
