Ignition Switch Disassembly

Post by oldbikerdude »

So, can anyone offer me some advice.
I have removed the ignition switch from the bike, and want to clean the contacts.
I'm at this point,

,

It seems like I can rotate the white cap from the base somewhat, but it won't come off.
Did my Goldwing a few years back, but can't recall how to separate.

Is there a trick to get the switch apart without breaking anything?
Thanks

Work a small screwdriver between the white and black part and rotate and pull, It will come apart, but the pin does stick.

Finally got the black and white pieces apart, and cleaned up the contact points, they didn't appear that bad.
Getting the two pieces apart reminded me of pulling the front brake reservoir off of the master cylinder casting. Wasn't easy to pull them apart. Worked two screwdrivers at the same time, and needed a third hand, but finally got it apart.
Its amazing that that little flared end on the pin can retain the white piece to the degree it does.

Here's the two halves,

Contact points with retained springs, I stretched the springs a touch from just over 7 mm to 8 mm.

The condition of the contacts as pulled apart, not terrible,

very light sanding to clean up the contacts.

Last pic of the mating contacts to above pic.

Then pressed the two halves together.
Now installed back on bike.
