vacuum petcock elimination

Post by zorrozona »

Any wisdom on eliminating the vacuum petcock?
Acknowledge the importance of shutting off the fuel and my short term memory!

I replaced my vacuum petcock with a Pingel petcock.
My logic for shutting off the petcock everytime is
You shut the key off everytime, just add shut off the petcock. I shut off the petcock when I had the vacuum petcock and never understood why people would leave it on.

If it's for an '82 model, diaphragms are available for replacement.
I still have mine and try to switch it off every time. Sometimes i still forget though and it's nice to have backup.

Just to be clear, the petcock is not a 'vacuum' one. All the vacuum parts are downstream from the petcock. You did not eliminate that feature by just changing petcocks.

Zorro: I assume you want to delete/bypass the "vacuum valve" and feed directly from the petcock on the tank into the carbs. It is a straightforward job. Depending on what bike you have, you will need a T joint in the fuel line to feed two carb inlets. Plug the vacuum connection on the carbs.

Right Dave, I also removed the vacuum fuel shutoff valve. I drain my carbs after every ride and eliminating the autovalve as Honda calls it makes starting easier.

I'm with you on the carb drain. If it's going to sit more than 2 days, drain. Takes all of 5 minutes. Never had a carb issue in 20+ years. (Except leaking o-rings!) And, yes, it does make starting easier. Just give the carbs a bit of time to fill while putting on a helmet.
