My Pro-link project.

Post by patzx12 »

Getting close to completing a long drawn out modernisation of my 82 CBX1000.
I started with a sweet running low mileage Texas bike.
Unlike most owners I prefer the Pro-link bikes.
The aim is to have a usable touring CBX.
I will go into the details of the bike when its running.
Tip:
If you are going to build a CBX my tip of the day is have 2 bikes. One on the road and one in rebuild, saves all that fantasising about riding the thing.
I have 4 CBX1000.
3 in bits and my road Pro-link.
I also recently bought a 79 frame with title from Germany, picked it up in France from a buddy's place on my way from Spain to Ireland.
Here is a taster + a picture of my road bike.

Looking forward to the details, Pat.
Bigger brakes and stronger forks in the second pic are CBR F4?

I like the lamp holder brackets on the Magnum Silver one. 8) What are they?

On my silver bike:
I made the lamp brackets in a similar style to the top engine hangers.
I also made the S/S brackets for the oil cooler.
I made a small batch of Kawa alternator kits. I machine down the lugs of the alternator to get it closer into the engine.

My second Prolink is finally on the road and running well.
Its a low mileage Texas bike, all I did to the engine was polish and paint plus a service.
Handling is excellent.
CBF forks tuned by K-tech in the UK and lengthened by me.
Triples are modified Varadero, I made a top plate out of 6mm alloy to key the handlebars and hold the instruments.
CBR600 front calipers on EBC discs.
Modded VFR800 handlebars, I made them wider.
Varadero wheels and PR3 tyres. I wanted to keep to a 19" front wheel.
The Prolink linkage had to be modified to allow the wider tyre.
I modified the rear wheel \ sprocket carrier to get the wheel and chain run correct.
Blackbird rear caliper.
Custom made Wilburs rear shock (really good).
My own Kawasaki alternator kit, I machine the lugs and get it inboard as much as possible.
I am running a C5 ignition with rev limiter.
Blackbird mirrors with my custom made billet mountings.
BSM exhausts, the bike is super quiet.
Its a slightly sport riding position and I like it. A change from my daily BMW Adventure.
The bike is incredibly smooth riding, it will sit happily at 9000 rpm.
I also added Satnav and heated grips.

The bike looks great, Pat.
Better braking, handling and stealthy exhaust will probably allow you to surprise some modern bikes.

Some more tweaking.
With the bike on the road I had time to evaluate and tweak.
I went at the Prolink mechanism and did a Mk2 mod to the linkage, this set-up gives me 160mm between bolt heads.
Al the bushings are self lube bronze.
I made an eccentric adjustment for the top eye of the Wilbur shock to give more ride height, if I was buying a shock again I would go for one with ride height adjustment.
I did a wheel alignment and a very thorough brake bleed.
I have CBR front calipers and a Blackbird rear caliper using all three sets of pistons. My master cylinders are from an R1200GS.
The brakes are really good now with a powerful rear anchor.
I ditched the PR3 tyres and fitted Pirelli Angels onto my 110 \ 19 front and 150 \17 rear. The PR3 just didn't feel right for a heavy touring bike.
All in very happy with the bike.
Tip: when aligning the wheels with a length of string just wrap it around the rear tyre and trap a piece of paper between the front of the rear tyre and the string, all I do it move out the 2 strings until the papers slip out. I can then align the rear wheel using the adjusters.

What is an "Mk2 mod"?
A buddy has just put his third set of Pirelli Angels on his Busa. Swears by the grip and longevity.

Hi Steve
Its my 2nd go at modifying the linkage to allow a wider tyre.
First time I just cut off the inner legs but was unsure about the loading on the 10mm bolt

I'm very late to this party, I went digging through your post history when I saw this bike with the Varadero wheels.

I'm just here to say I think it looks great, and you've made some really smart choices here.
