CB1100F Fork swap

So I bought my CBX earlier this summer. Its a 82 Prolink which was repainted and came with CB1100F Gold Boomerangs and a 6-1 D&G exhaust.

I replaced the tach and speedo which were faulty and had broken needles.

I replaced the tires and gave it a fresh oil change and filter.

The left front fork is leaking a bit so I started to look at fixing that. I ordered fork oil and seals and after reading on this board I decided I wanted to go ahead and install CB1100F Canadian model forks.

I sourced a canadian fork set along with the calipers and rotors and will be posting my progress for the swap.

Next I also want to look at maybe changing the rear suspension. I will see how the bike handles after doing the front.

I also plan to repaint the bike during the winter either in the proper Pearl Altair White or will go the custom route and go with a black with Orange stripe scheme like the CB900F.

So I ordered a bunch of parts to rebuild the forks. Most of the small stuff like o-rings and rubber parts came from CMSNL and other parts I had to source either locally or buy off E-bay.

I stripped the CB1100F forks apart and cleaned / stripped them off. Will be powder coating them in the next few days.

Will post pics as I progress.

If your bike had 11F gold boomerangs, your speedometer will be off. You have an 18" front instead of a 19". Your front wheel will rotate faster.
Considering that speedometers are never accurate, this will add to your indicated speed

Yes my boomerangs are 2.50 front and 2.75 back. I put new shinko's front 100/90/18 and back 130/90/17.

Maybe that's why I start white knuckling at 130KM :D

Best thing you can do for the rear suspension is just get rid of the air bag. Replace with a Progressive or Ikon shock.

So my friend power coated the fork parts this week-end. Overall a pretty good job considering he did it is in garage with a conventional stove. Now the fun starts putting them back together and then on the bike. Can't wait.

Yeah, curing parts with the oven in the kitchen usually doesn't go over well with the significant other.
Yes, that would be speaking from experience.

I'm in a pickle. I started to reassemble the forks. I have a CB1100F service and repair manual and a clymer but I can't find were these parts go and I can't remember where they should go.

One part is a steel bushing / sleeve 31.5 mm in diameter by 50mm in length and its split just like a bushing.

The second is a steel washer. 31.5mm

Initially I thought they should go around the piston to guide it. Between the small fork rebound spring and the top of the piston but this way it would interfere with the piston travel.

I looked at different CB1100 part diagrams and ended up finding part # 51403-ME5-003 - Plate, sprg joint (#5 on diagram) and #51406-ME5-003 - Collar, Spring (#8 on diagram) on the CB1100RDII Australian model ???

Did any of you encounter this using a canadian CB1100F fork set ?

So since my last post turns out it is indeed a spacer that usually comes with shorter springs. My springs being stock length I will not reinstall them.

Started to disassemble the front end. The front wheel is now off and I was able to start cleaning it up. At the same time I took those shots with the new rotors and I weighted them;

Original CBX rotors = 5.6 lbs each
CB1100F Gold rotors = 3.6 lbs each
CB900F vented rotors = 3.4 lbs each

Next I will be bleeding the brake line so I can swap the callipers and removing the forks !!!

Love the gold boomerangs, either F rotor would look good, depends on your taste!

So swap is done !

Definitively needed to put those spacers back on. I think the Canadian fork may be slightly longer so that even with the stock spring specs outlined in the manual that is why the spacer is needed.

Put in 281CC of fresh 5 wt Honda Fork oil.

Took it out for a test ride on Sunday (we had some beautiful weather here in Montreal this week-end in the 30C, summer temperatures) handles very well, nice and stable. Lots of different tweaking options to choose from - Damping - Air - Anti-Dive - Hex nut to add spring pressure - so it will take a while to get the best setup. but very happy overall.

I rebuilt the calipers, they will need a bit more bleeding. I ordered some braided brakes lines to finish the setup.

Next the rear shock.

Looks great, it's all up to the individual and your riding position preference but shorter clipons are another common mod for that conversion.

Just an observation, the DG exhaust system is a poor performing pipe, midrange suffers with that pipe! Artie here on the forum is selling a set of Kerkers, one of the best performing 6 into 2 aftermarket systems ever produced, just saying!

Yes I saw the add for the Kerkers and I am thinking about it. There is also a set for sale here in Canada for $900 CAD ($670USD)

The issue with the Kerker could be fitment with the centre stand maybe ?

Also looking at an Original OEM CBX set with the crossover pipe or the repro set.

I heard good things about the Kerker.
