I'm fighting it out on the fighter forum for bike of the year.....Keeping the CBX fight alive, showing the young what was cool....will always be cool

My GS1000 is also in the fight, but not really classified as a fighter.....but still made it to the second round

You are in some remarkable company there - and deservedly so! It was kind of hard for me to not vote for the Martek 1246, but luckily for you, I don't like turbos on bikes or 3-spoke Ducati wheels.cbxtreeme wrote:I'm fighting it out on the fighter forum for bike of the year.....Keeping the CBX fight alive, showing the young what was cool....will always be cool

Re: 20 years of....Building the dream......
Every little bit helps
If you read through some of the Martek, you'll see that the owner did none of the work on it...and admitted he didn't have full knowledge of all that was done.
One of the big things with that forum is......bought AND built by you,....is respected.
But someone who comes in with a bought bike, throws it out there, yet never contributes in any forums.....pisses off a lot of hands on guys.

Re: 20 years of....Building the dream......
Bike has been sitting for quite a bit....
Lost some compression in one of my cylinders.
Leakdown showed it to be through an intake valve.
All valves had clearance within spec......so looks like it's time for new valves
Yes....all of them if I have to do it, Have 24 stainless valves coming from TIMSCBX
Then I will get my spare head stripped down and send it out to get them all seated and tips set within spec.
Then maybe I will get it on the road again.

Re: 20 years of....Building the dream......
Just reading from Mike Nixon that he is now using Manley valves instead of Kibblewhite.
What brand are you getting from Tims?
Randy, lots of gearheads here. A couple pics of your new shop/garage and/or the new RZV project would be great.

Re: 20 years of....Building the dream......
Not sure where the CBX valves are originating from, but I know they had to be special ordered...
The RZV project is turning into more of a long term effort than original considered.....Imagine that
This was after I uncrated it from it's trip from Japan to my garage...I tore into it the next day.
I thought the CBX was complex.....I will say the RZV engine is in the same league
More can be seen here

Re: 20 years of....Building the dream......
If you have access to Vapor Blasting, I would recommend that treatment to the head. Just make sure the guy knows what he is doing. On the CBX head it is a little difficult to protect the cam bearing locations and valve actuating bucket seats from the blasting process.

Re: 20 years of....Building the dream......
I'll soda blast the head myself. It does a great job and does not remove surface material (aluminum ) at all.
I have been using my soda blaster for several years now, and is a miracle cleaner that I can do under my own control.

Re: 20 years of....Building the dream......
That RZV reminds me of the Honda NS400 Nils recently had in his shop. Similar intent, but one less cylinder (a V3!) The 80's were a great time in motorcycling...

Re: 20 years of....Building the dream......
Near the end of August I came to the conclusion that I really need to ride more and work less in the garage.
I needed a bike that was comfortable for the wife for more than an hour, yet could keep me entertained when I rode alone.
This was my compromise...175HP tour bike with attitude.
Needless to say little has been done in the garage since.
Still waiting on my head to get stainless valves seated for the CBX
And started collecting more NOS parts for the RZV again.....
Riding weather is long gone now....so it's back to the garage to finish what I started

Re: 20 years of....Building the dream......
I believe I have some major problems with my new stainless valves...
They visually seemed fine at the start, so I put all the exhaust valves in and everything looked good.
But when I started putting the intakes in....I believe there is a problem.
The exhaust valves stick out beyond the retainer as the originals did.
But the intake valves are set in at same level or lower than the retainer.
Either the seats were cut too deep and tops of valves cut off to compensate for shims, or the lock was machined in the wrong spot.
This isn't the way they should be.....no clue what issues I would have with finding shims too.
