Shipping a bike

Post by rsuarez »

Hi, not being form the US I don't know how to do this. I just bough an old Ducati that is sitting in Pennsylvania and I need to ship it to San Antonio Texas prior to exporting it to Mexico. Can someone give me some pointers on shipping companies and tips. Its only Pennsylvania to Texas, the export part I already have it solved.

Thanks.

you'll need a shipping container, bike dealers have used shipping crates, if you ask nicely they may give you one...my ducatti dealer wanted $75 for a pallet and cardboard box something they were going to recycle and the Honda dealer said I could have a metal platform for free...
CBX a work in progress, still improving...GS1150EFE completed and awaiting modifications.....RD350, remnants in boxes scattered throughout the garage

You won't need a container to get it from PA to Texas. Don't know about from there on.

My CBX was shipped to me in Minnesota from Pennsylvania by Haul Bikes. http://haulbikes.com/

No crate, no prep. Leave gas in the tank. It will arrive ready to ride. I had zero problems. Check out their website.

if you have a dedicated shipper that doesn't require a crate that's great but a motorcycle shipping crate protects your investment. I've heard enough stories of damaged bikes, lost bits and pieces and bikes tampered with, a box is good value.

Haulbikes is a dedicated shipper. Motorcycles only. Sure, a box is nice, and things can happen. I'm not telling you how to ship. Just one alternative. It worked well for me. Do whatever makes you comfortable.

if a motorcycle dealer is willing to give a container for free why not make use of it.

Thanks to all. I placed a service request through uship.com and got contacted by a motorcycle specialist. He has an impressive client rating and good price. He will pick the bike next Saturday... lets see.

Thanks again.
