New Garage Mate

Post by EMS »

There is this new "thing" occupying garage space....

It has the same number of cylinders as 3 popular American made motorcycles together...
5047
It has the displacement of 3 classic Honda motorcycles of the 70s combined
5046
..and it has the same horsepower as a Cessna 172r
5048

It does have the same amount of cams and valves as a CBX, but twice the torque.....

Haha! I totally figured you for a K1600.

Which one did you get? GT or GTL?

I bet you did it 'for your wife' to go touring two-up on. What a great guy you are Mike :-).

:D :D Actually, we have always been "touring" two-up. That's one reason, I prefer the 81 Prolink over the 79 CBX. My wife was the driving force behind us getting a R1100RT 11 years ago and she was actually more excited about getting this "thing" than I was....She was a great help and support on deciding what to do. It is a GT. The GTL feels too big and I can not sit on it due to the low seat. It cramps my legs up too much. 8)

O.K., I had a chance to take a few more pictures. The bike is quite a handful. Absolutely no comparison with a CBX. You can tell it targets a totally different market segment and is supposed to compete with both the GL and the HD FLH. It is huge and heavy. At least when you push it around. As soon as you ride it, it becomes surprisingly nimble and light around the steering neck. It goes into turns quicker than my R1100RT and does not feel top-heavy at all.

It is too bad the motor is hidden behind all that plastic. I would take the lower cowl off, but it holds some of the engine cooling components.
5066

The performance is awe-inspiring for a big tourer. With 160 hp and 129 ftlbs of torque, there is not much around you will not pull away from when accelerating out of a turn or rolling on the throttle at 50 mph.
The only thing I think requires getting used to is the e-throttle. It has little or no feedback response, at least for me. So far, I can only ride it in the most agressive of three settings, the "dynamic" mode, otherwise I stall the thing at every launch.

When I took the pictures, one of my best buddies insisted to pose with the bike...

5065

..and the, of course, his cousin, always jealous of him and afraid he gets preferred treatment wanted to pose also....these guys

Looks interesting.

Too back the closest BMW dealer is 90 miles away.

Now i get it...you bought that colour scheme because the stripes match the colour of your dog.
Makes perfect sense to me.

One can sneak nothing by you, Steve!!! You got it. 8) That would be the only reason to buy that color.....  There must be a guy at BMW Design with terrible taste and he manages to convince them to agree to one really bad color for at least one model every year. In 2012, the K1600GT got it. :no

But seriously...the stripes are not stock, of course. I added them to break that bland appearance up a bit.
